Leave us alone, Real Madrid!

Friday, August 21st, 2009

According to Slasheramania.com the first rule of surviving a horror film is never check to see if the monster is dead. After seeing Real Madrid bludgeoned at Anfield and torn to shreds by Barcelona, it would have been wise to prepare for them to storm from the grave. Like a monster with blood vengeance Madrid stormed into the summer transfer market. As the Premiership opens, a quick look around the top four looks more like victims from a horror film than surging power brokers of world football.

Madrid put 80,000 in the stadium to put Ronaldo on display.

As Much as I can

On the weekend I attended the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee. That would be 75,000 people in the blistering sun sleeping in tents or RVs while hundreds of bands various stages and tents. This year I set out to talk to as many football fans as I could. The world of football was well represented. On Saturday alone we saw 30 teams represented including the entire big 4, as well as teams from Italy, Spain Mexico, and Holland. I attended 15 shows over the course of the 3 days with Phoenix, David Byrne and Bruce Springsteen standing out. In between shoes I talked to a bunch of fans here were some of the top pics and quotes.

Run the Break

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

In 2001 I went to Spain and fell in love with football. The new boy on the La Liga Block was Deportivo La Coruna. At the time they were coming off a stunning title run in 1999-2000. They were an up and coming team that flustered their opponents by changing back and forth between two styles. They would play 4-5-1 with Current Hammer Diego Tristan leading the line as the target or they would play straight 4-4-2 with Roy Makaay pairing up with Walter Pandiani. In both formations they were built front to back, basing their play on the layout of the top line of their attack. Like dinosaurs, David Beckham’s speed, Victoria Beckham’s sex appeal and Wu Wear, that style is on the wane. It seems we have entered into a new era of football. An era I like to call Fastbreak Football, in which the play builds from the center of the park. Examples are everywhere. (more…)

All of Nothing Team

In the featured video President Obama cheers on his daughter in a school girl soccer game. It’s pretty impressive that our Commander in Chief is at the very least a fan of football played by his kids. Maybe the game is on the upshot in this country.

I watched the 4-4 Champions league thriller between Liverpool and Chelsea with some people from work. During the game, one of the women called Liverpool’s defensive efforts: “Absolute school girl defending.” Not too often do you hear a woman use being a girl as an insult. But it sounded really funny at the time. At any rate here is our list of who has been the worst of the worst. Who has been defending like school girls and who has been sleeping on the bench for Real Madrid. Yes, you Julien Flaubert. (more…)
