The world focuses on the players that play in the top European leagues. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Wayne Rooney are just a few of the top players the world has to offer. However there is one player that most have never even heard of—Arda Turan.
For the past 12 years, Arda embarked on an unforgettable journey with the most prestigious club in Turkey, Galatasaray. He rose through their youth system and eventually wore the honorable number 10 and captain’s arm band at the tender age of 22. With that in mind, it is difficult to forget the first time he suited up for the Lions in a competitive game.
In August 2006, Mlada Boleslav played guest to Galatasaray and the 19 year old Arda Turan was shockingly placed in the starting 11. At the time, it was unbelievable how a youngster was given a chance in a very important game. However his performance answered anyone in doubt.
He was bursting with confidence and he didn’t show any signs of fear. He scored two goals and added an assist to showcase his jaw dropping performance. The second goal he scored saw him in a one on one situation with the defender who had the keeper covering his back. Their tactic didn’t work as Arda calmly slotted the ball home into the bottom right corner.
He was 19 in his first ever European and he played like a veteran. It was a performance that will forever be etched into the hearts of Galatasaray fans. However he is more than just a club player.
One of his best performances ever for his beloved nation of Turkey arrived in the second group stage match against hosts Switzerland in EURO 2008. The game was tied at one apiece and Arda Turan struck a stunning winner in added time for the win. He cut past a few defenders and placed the ball accurately into the top corner.
Then in the final group game, Turkey was down 2-0 heading into the final fifteen and he scored the first goal that led to the amazing comeback victory. His presence, youth, energy, and leadership were felt at both club and international level.
Now the time has finally come for “great captain” Arda to leave the familiar nest. After months of speculation regarding his transfer out of the Turkish Super League, he has finally joined Atletico Madrid of Spain’s top flight. He will be greatly missed by his club but will continue to shine for his country.
When he first began playing for Gala, he was excited to play. After 5-6 successful seasons, he has lost his appetite for Turkish soccer. He had issues with the media regarding his personal life as well so he decided it was time to go abroad.
Spain’s La Liga is regarded as one of the top 3 leagues in the world and the style of play is rapid. He is very quick, has a good touch, and has brilliant vision. The problem is that he hasn’t been showing his talents too much towards the end of his stint with Gala. Will he be able to regain and maybe even improve his form in Spain?
In order to get quality playing time, he needs to work much harder than he ever has. There is a lot more running, passing, and defending in La Liga. For him to impress the coach, he needs to get into top shape in order to provide a full ninety minutes on the field.
If he succeeds in Spain, it will be a huge stepping stone in Turkish soccer. Young Turkish players may follow in his footsteps to better leagues across Europe and make names for themselves. What they learn in Europe could be useful in improving the Turkish national team.
This will be a tough season for Galatasaray as they now seek a replacement for the star pupil. They have quality players in Selcuk Inan and Kazim Richards but Arda Turan’s presence will certainly be missed.
Atletico Madrid has signed a player that will provide a spark after some time. Patience is the key for both player and club but if he works hard, Arda will succeed.
