"Hazard"ous
Posted by Gio Franco

If Eden Hazard had found himself living in the early 90s many in the blue side of London would have constructed a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" to his name. Chelsea's display Monday night in the Etihad against Manchester City was one to remember. Jose Mourinho was coy in the post game interviews in regards to how Chelsea performed. Manuel Pellegrini on the other hand will do diligence to get his squad to forget this game and to keep their minds on the task at hand, the possible quadruple. The title race has intensified between first through third as only two points separate them.

The Blues found themselves snapping Manchester City's home record, handing city their first defeat at the Etihad this campaign. One of the key main factors to Chelsea's victory and the position they currently are in contending for the premiership is the form of their Belgian winger Eden Hazard. The young Belgian has become a main attribute to Mourinho's side and cog to Chelsea's attack. Hazard's technique and speed helps add another dimension to the blues when they go forward. His movement from both sides of the pitch was in fact the reason that brought about Chelsea’s goal on Monday night. Many pundits at the start of last season were critical about the young Belgian's price tag from Lille, but he has more than excelled for Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho when asked about his team's chances of winning the Premier League was coy and perhaps honest with his response. Maybe its the hindsight that Chelsea FC although is playing cohesive and collected football, still lack one key cog. The key the blues are missing is a front man who can score goals left and right. The current strikers at Chelsea have yet to yield a steady flow of goals on their accounts. The last striker the blues could rely on will be making a return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League, Didier Drogba. The acquisitions of Samuel Eto'o, Demba Ba, Andre Schurrle, and Fernando Torres have failed to replicate their value with goals scored.

In fact Eto'o and only Eto'o can make the only argument, that he took a massive 12 million Euro pay cut to come to Chelsea. Out of the 14 games Samuel has played he bagged six goals for the Blues, his hat trick against Manchester United was alone probably worth his possible "free" transfer from Russia to Chelsea. Demba Ba on the other hand also went to Chelsea on an undisclosed transfer fee, but has yet to reciprocate his form he enjoyed at Newcastle United.

Then you have the German Spanish duo, the duo that was got Roman Abrahmovich to spend a total of 68 million pounds. Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres, both seem to be an open and closed sore for Chelsea. Although the jury between the Chelsea faithful is out on Torres, since his marketing value and capability at the club have been stellar. But his form on the field has been a shadow of how he was performing at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool. As for Schurrle, it’s been evident he has been finding it difficult to play according to Mourinho's style. Perhaps the remedy for Andre is to be patient and eventually he will find his stride and the back of the net, but time will only tell.

Mourinho is aware of his squad's capabilities and what position they lack at the moment. The note to take is his ability to get them performing to their best utmost ability and playing to their strengths literally. Maybe Chelsea will not win the Premier League and again maybe they will. They need their forwards to be "firing on all cylinders," and currently they have been "grinding the gears." The light in the Blues world is shining Red, Black and Yellow, Hazard's technique, talent, and pace was enough to help Lille in Ligue 1, and it should be enough to keep Chelsea in the top three.
