Premier League Recap (April 2-3)
West Ham 2-4 Manchester United
The Hammers shocked United in the first half and were at 2-0 at the break thanks to a pair of penalties converted by Mark Noble. You just knew, however, that if Man Utd got one then they would probably get two and then probably three. Well, that did happen thanks to Wayne Rooney. His hat trick gave United the lead and Chicharito got a fourth just to rub it in the faces of the home side. This team will win the title.
Stoke 1-1 Chelsea
This was actually a thrilling game. The last 20 minutes or so saw more chances than a couple full matches combined. Petr Cech was unbelievable in goal for Chelsea for most of the match even though Jonathan Walters opened the scoring with a great run and finish inside of ten minutes. Didier Drogba leveled the match after a perfect header from a Nic Anelka cross. The woodwork was rattled by both clubs but Stoke could not get a second goal they deserved and the match ended in a draw.
Everton 2-2 Aston Villa
This was a fairly big game for both clubs with Everton Streaking and Villa struggling. Leon Osman got the first for Everton with a good run and strike but Villa would get it back with a Darren Bent goal who was played in by Stuart Downing. Then the controversy started when Jermaine Beckford should’ve had a goal after his shot was ricocheted over the line but not given. While that was happening Bent went and scored again to give Villa the lead. Everton were awarded a penalty thanks to Jean Makoun taking down Phil Jagielka in the box. Although it may have been a make-up call it rightly got Everton a point when Leighton Baines put it away.
Wigan 0-0 Tottenham
Another disappointing result for Spurs. I guess you can’t blame them with Real Madrid coming up on Tuesday.
Newcastle 4-1 Wolves
Kevin Nolan gave Newcastle the lead after a Shola Ameobi flick on. Ameobi would get his to double the lead and Peter Lovenkrands made it three. Wolves would get one back through Sylvan Ebanks-Blake but that was it for the away side. Jonas Gutierrez even added a fourth to complete a great win.
Birmingham 2-1 Bolton
A battle of B’s and contrasting styles was won by Birmingham thanks to the wily veteran Kevin Phillips and midfielder Craig Gardner. Johan Elmander karate kicked a volley home to get one back but that was about it for Bolton.
West Brom 2-1 Liverpool
Anyone, save Liverpool fans, would be happy to see West Brom boss, Roy Hodgson, get a win against the club that sacked him just a couple months ago. His team did just that with a strong performance. It was 0-0 at the break but Liverpool would take the lead thanks to a Matin Skyrtel headed goal. West Brom equalized with a Chris Brunt penalty and would eventually get the lead on another penalty that Brunt smashed home after Pepe Reina weakly brought down Peter Odemwingie. This was a huge three points for West Brom in the relegation battle.
Arsenal 0-0 Blackburn
The reason I said that Manchester United will win the title has not to do with their play but the fact that Arsenal just doesn’t seem to want it. Another home draw to a lesser opponent has Gunners worldwide pissed off. They had their chances, 11 attempts on target, but Blackburn defended well, even with ten men.
Manchester City 5-0 Sunderland
Man City went up 2-0 (Adam Johnson and Carlos Tevez) early and Sunderland visibly gave up. The third, fourth, and fifth goals were scored by David Silva, Patrick Veiera, and Yaya Toure, respectively. That’s about all you need to know about this one.
Fulham 3-0 Blackpool
Bobby Zamora is looking good again and his two goals to start the match were proof of that. The London club would get a third and consequently get the three points.
The two big Manchester clubs were the big winners as the three big London clubs all drew this weekend to liven up the race for Champions League spots. The relegation battle is becoming a dogfight and any of the bottom half could easily go down. No big matchup, but a good weekend in the Premier League.
