Cesar's subs make a "big impact"
Posted by Gio Franco

On a frigid evening in Tijuana Mexico, something many would not associate our friends south of the border with, a cold winter. All things aside Xoloitzcuintles took on Monterrey in their sixth league match in Liga MX. Club TJ has been enduring a different season again under a new coach Cesar Farias. Before entering this game Xolos were sitting in the middle of the new Clasaura table at ninth. After their drubbing in Mexico City Xoloitzcuintles were looking to "right the ship." Especially with the upcoming fixtures ahead and their coming CONCACAF Champion's League match against the LA Galaxy.

Monterrey on the other hand has been bearing the brunt of a dismal Clasaura campaign. Monterrey since the start of the New Year has only achieved one win in six games. Head Coach Jose Cruz also is looking to get his squad back on track.

At the start of the first half, Xoloitzcuintles came out in a 4-3-3 formation, and Monterrey approached this match with 5-3-2 formations. The game was in fact "end to end" drama for both teams; Club TJ looked strong on the build up, but failed to challenge the Monterrey goal. Monterrey's formation allowed their midfield to link up with their defense on the break, which opened the field up for the counter attack. As a matter of fact Monterrey should have been up 1-0 at the break, but Marlon Jesus scuffed his shot wide of the far post in the 16th minute. Monterrey looked very threatening on the counter; their quick passing game was able to find outlets to burst up the field. The first half ended as it started unfortunately, but it was hard to foretell a 0-0 draw in this match.

The second half it took 21 minutes for the break through to occur, Cesar Delgado for the striped men streaked and weaved into the top of the 18 yard box and bolted his shot into the back of the net. The Xolos were down a goal but refused to give in, and nine minutes after the break through Dario Bennedetto, who was subbed in at the 59th minute, smashed in the equalizer for Tijuana. Bennedetto's goal had an immediate impact on Tijuana's morale as they pressed and pressed for the winning goal. Xoloitzcuintles finally found their winner in the 6 minutes from the full time whistle. On a break down the field Bennedetto was able to cross the ball in the Monterrey box and his cross, found the sub Juan Hernandez who nodded the ball across goal again for Pellerano to head the ball to goal.

At the full time whistle Xolos achieved all three points and Monterrey go back home with nothing. Perhaps undeservedly as Jose Cruz's side looked extremely threatening on the break. Food for thought for friends and fans of the LA Galaxy that are due to play Xolos in March. Club Tijuana is in stride with their current season now, and will be on form when they visit LA March 12.
