The People Beyond the Wall
The People Beyond the Wall

"Every day you make progress.  Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will strecth out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path.  You know you will never get to the end of the journey.  But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and the glory of the climb.   - Sir Winston Churchill.

Turn on your television and flip to the news.  You might see a city burning, police skirmish lines, angry people with raised fists and signs of defiance.  For us Californians it brings back stark images of LA in the 90's when one Rodney King was senselessly knocked around by officers who had more adrenaline than common sense one fateful night.  And now, over a decade later, we are seeing it again across the pond.

Way over here, I do not in any way profess to be an expert as to what is going on over there.  I was fortunate enough to be over there last year when Cameron took office and I'll tell you what, I fell in love with that city.  I couldn't take two steps without tripping over some historical something that probably outdated any of our U.S. history by 1,000 years.  There was so much history that I actually found myself saying, "What's the big deal, that building is only 500 years old!"  And now that history is burning.

In this time when we should all be completely amped about football and the start of the Prem, and the continuance of the nPower Football League, it is hard to focus on such things when there is turmoil surrounding these fun, but in the big picture, insignificant matches.  While footballers take the pitch, other people are returning to their businesses or homes so that they might assess the damage and begin the rebuilding of their lives.  While we cheer from way over here, there are some who are facing a real crisis just beyond the walls of our favorite football ground.

Is this to say that we should feel guilty?  No, that isn't the point of this blog.  Having seen what riots and discontent can cause, I think it is important to take a moment and say a prayer or whatever it is you believe in and wish those in London well.  In this day and age, when countries all along the Middle East are rioting on a daily basis, it seems no country is safe from an uprising.  I think London might have been one of the last countries I would have ever thought would go through this, yet they are and to some serious degree.

So please, as you sit down and enjoy the matches this weekend, just remember the people beyond the wall.  The rioters, then police and everyone in between.  We all hope that this ends quickly and for good.  Whatever the differences are, there is always a better way to figure them out.

Our thoughts are with you London.  Take care and be safe.
