Jermaine Beckford will be focusing on one thing this saturday at Goodison Park, scoring against Manchester United. It's been almost nine months since the former Leeds striker threaded the ball through Wes Brown and Tomasz Kuszczak to score the goal that would eventually give Leeds a historic FA Cup victory over their bitter rivals, Manchester United. Now he has the chance prove himself again once against United.
One season later, Beckford finds himself in the royal blue shirt of Everton amongst a squad who has only managed to score one goal and earn one point in the first three matches of the Premier league. Despite scoring in preseason matches and a penalty in Everton's carling cup match against Huddersfield Town, Beckford has seemed out of place in what has so far been a toothless Everton front line. However the season is young, and all it takes is one good result to reverse the fortunes of an Everton team trying to avoid last season's dismal start. Beckford hopes to be the goal-scoring catalyst for his new club, and there is no other team he would rather do this against than Manchester United.
Beckford will certainly get his chance, but whether or not Moyes will give him the starting role is yet to be determined. His main competition, Louis Saha, came on as a second-half substitute for Beckford at Villa Park only to become one of the most dangerous players for Everton's relentless, yet fruitless offence. Saha, another striker with motivation to peg back his former club United, could be given the starting role following that encouraging performance ahead of Beckford.
Deciding the striking role is not the only decision Moyes faces leading up to this weekend's match. Seamus Coleman has been in electric form lately and could challenge the veteran right back Tony Hibbert for the starting right back position with injured Phil Neville's absence. Moyes has tried three different midfield combinations in three matches and could very well experiment with a fourth come Saturday. Arteta and Pienaar are surely in the starting line-up, but who starts alongside them could be a number of combinations. Fellaini controlled the midfield well alongside Arteta against Villa and offers an aerial threat combined with physicality that complements Arteta's passing and ball control well. However Johnny Heitinga, who started against Wolves at Goodison Park, could be used as a strong defensive marker and try to keep United's potent forwards contained. Bilyaletdinov will certainly remember his left-footed rocket in last season's Goodison fixture, and if given the chance to start, will be on the left with Pienaar on the right. It is not out of the question that Jack Rodwell could start on the right side considering he was given that role against Villa. However, Moyes may start his starlet on the bench and use him for an injection of pace and explosiveness, which ultimately decided Everton's 3-1 victory last season.
This is a crucial match for David Moyes' side. They need not only results, but confidence and finishing in the final third against an always confident and talented Manchester United side, which is by no means an easy task. Step up Jermaine Beckford. |
