Spurs and Birmingham await tense clash

No section of supporters will be tenser on the nerve-wracking final day of the season than the Birmingham City fans that travel to White Hart Lane. Wigan Athletic and Blackpool are in the bottom three and will view survival as a great escape, but Blues followers thought their team to be safe before they picked up one point from the last 15 available.

Much time will be spent listening for updates from Old Trafford and the Britannia Stadium, where Wigan and Blackpool face away trips that for varying reasons are less arduous than they might have been and the Premier League betting odds reflect this.

Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan are locked together on 39 points, with respective goal differences of –20, -21 and -22. Blues fans know both their rivals can lose but still send City down if a heavy defeat is suffered at Spurs, and the danger of happening is significant.

The Blues have won twice away all season, at Blackpool and West Ham United, whilst Spurs have lost once at home, to Wigan. That shock result gives Birmingham hope, typifying as is does the struggles Tottenham have had at home against lowly opposition.

Since Birmingham first appeared in the Premier League in 2002/03, Spurs have won five of the six league matches at White Hart Lane, a 3-2 City victory in 2007/08 being something of a freak result, a match that Spurs should have won considering their dominance.

Tottenham have scored 13 goals in those six clashes, so Birmingham must fear the possibility of suffering a worse result than both Blackpool and Wigan, especially as they have scored fewer goals than their rivals, which will decide positions if goal difference is the same.

Spurs and Birmingham are two of the division's draw specialists, experiencing stalemates 19 times between them this term. Blues fans would be delighted with another draw, but the team's respective performances last weekend suggests they will be hoping for favours from Manchester United and Stoke.
