Brazilian coach Mano Menezes has revealed his delight at his attacking players’ most recent performance, saying that he expects them to continue improving as the 2011 Copa America progresses.
Brazil drew a blank in their first game against Venezuela, before a 2-2 draw with Ecudaor was followed by a thrilling 4-2 victory over Ecuador in their final Group B encounter.
There has been progression in each game with regards to attack performances, with Alexandre Pato and Neymar scoring two goals apiece against Ecuador having failed to find the back of the net in the opening two games.
Referring to his main two strikers, Menezes said: “Attackers can play well and score goals, but they need confidence. We gave our best attacking display against Ecuador, and this has given me more options. I knew it was only a matter of time before the forwards started playing well.”
During what has been a relatively low scoring tournament so far, the men in the famous Brazil Copa America Kit are actually leading scorers so far with six goals in their three games. However, Menezes is under no illusions about his side and admits they haven’t been the best side going forward.
The Brazil boss continued: “The figures can deceive us. We have not been the best team so far. Offensively, Chile have been the best. They have had a more defined pattern and possessed a balance over their three matches.”
“Although our training sessions have been based on attacking plays, we have not reached our level yet. However, this will get better with more time and confidence.”
Should this turn out to be the case, Paraguay should perhaps be fearful of Brazil in this weekend’s quarter-final. The two teams meet on Sunday and if Meneze’s comments are anything to go by, it will be an open, attacking and therefore entertaining contest.
The winner of this match will play either Chile or Venezuela in the semi-final and even though Menezes says he will ‘not think that far ahead’ it has to be said that Brazil v Chile would be one of the stand out fixtures of the tournament so far.
