United chaos in Greece
United chaos in Greece

Many old headlines coming out of Greece in the past were in fact negative, discussing the austerity bill. The austerity bill, that set the entire nation of Greece into chaos and violence in recent times. But here is something that even the great, Pericles himself could of smiled down in Piraeus Greece. Olympiacos was the first team in Champions League to win at home during the round of 16. Kokkinoi were entertaining the English Champions, Manchester United, who are not even a shadow of who they were last year.

Manchester United went into this tie the favorite of the two, and with an assumption that they would get "a result" in Greece. In fact the Greek outfit proved to be a more than a thorn in the English side's foot. To the contrary Olympiacos found themselves in the group stages with PSG, Benfica, and Anderlecht. Thrylos did not get to the Champion's League round of 16 undeservedly; they defeated the Portuguese giants Benfica and outscored Benfica to get where they are now.

The match Tuesday evening in Piraeus Greece was a good test for Manchester United and their new manager, who has showed they can perform better at times on the road than at home. In fact this away performance by United is typical to all their performances this campaign in general. A truth to it all is that United seem to lack a drive in all aspects to the game. This team won the premier league last year, and gave Real Madrid a run for their money in Europe as well. The only real difference between this campaign and last year's is a managerial change.

Many have put David Moyes under the microscope this year, and perhaps when it comes to certain areas rightly so. In recent performances many have questioned Moyes capability of changing tactics midway through the game, to better see out a result. Tuesday evening United found themselves down a goal after 38 minutes when Maniatis drove a shot into the crowded penalty area. Dominguez that sent De Gea the wrong way flicked Maniatis shot on and it was 1-0 to the home side with a little more than 50 minutes left in the game. Even though United were capable of dominating possession of the ball, they were unable to make anything concrete of their possession. Their crosses were off target; they couldn't penetrate into the Olympiacos defense by conventional means. The only pressure coming from the Red Devils came from their woeful crosses, which could of fooled many spectators if the delivery was a cross or a shot.

At half time some thought a change was coming for the Red Devils, but instead it was "steady on" for United. Which Manchester United bit the bullet, ten minutes after the restart, Michael Olaitan found Joel Campbell in the middle of the field. Joel played the between Carrick’s legs and hooked the ball onto his left foot and past De Gea for the Thrylos second goal of the night. Five minutes from the Arsenal loanee’s goal came Moyes’ change Welbeck came on for the dismal Valencia and Cleverly went off for Kagawa. Even after the change, United still appeared sluggish, and when they finally had a decent opportunity they were wasteful. No moment could better depict the frustration by the Red Devils than that of Robin Van Persie’s miss in the 82 minute. Smalling was able to find Van Persie inside the Olympiacos box; the first real decent opportunity for United and Robin blasted it high over the bar.

A defeat in Greece was a possibility, but United will regret not acquiring an away goal in their first leg encounter in Piraeus. In fact it will make the job back at Old Trafford a rather challenging mountain to climb. Since United will have to win 2-0 just to tie the aggregate score. Food for thought for United Supporters, this defeat in Greece is David Moyes first defeat in the Champions League. The legitimate test lies ahead for David Moyes, when United will look to overturn this defeat at Old Trafford in front of the home supporters, who have been very patient with the new boss. Remember football fans, two goals for the red Devils to tie, three to win, with hopes that the Erythrolefkoi can’t get on the score sheet in Manchester.
