Gameweek 7 was upon us and the teams would be throwing out every star player before they head off for another international break. There were plenty of talking points that would go down on Saturday and Sunday so let’s get to it.
Everton 0-2 Liverpool
The home team, Everton, came into this Merseyside derby in good form and a win was within reach. Liverpool, however, came in looking to avenge last season’s loss to Everton. The match was completely altered when Jack Rodwell was unfairly sent off for his challenge on Luis Suarez. Suarez was again fouled but this time in the box, penalty to Liverpool. Tim Howard saved Dirk Kuyt’s weak attempt and it would still be 0-0 at halftime. Andy Carroll changed that with his first goal in a Merseyside clash. Suarez was again involved, but this time with a late goal to seal the away points for the Reds.
Aston Villa 2-0 Wigan
Gabby Agbonlahor continued his great start to the season with the first goal of the game. Wigan can’t catch a break so far and Darren Bent ended their day with a second Villa goal to wrap up the three points.
Blackburn 0-4 Manchester City
All of the Carlos Tevez drama was put to rest for a couple of hours and the Manchester club could just play football. Sergio Aguero went off injured in the first half, but the man with the strongest name in the Premier League, Adam Johnson, got City’s first goal. Mario Balotelli looked great all afternoon and got himself a goal before Samir Nasri made it three. New signing, Stefan Savic, then got his first goal for the club to finish it at 4-0.
Manchester United 2-0 Norwich
After back to back draws against Stoke and Basel, United looked to get back to their winning ways against Norwich. Anderson and Danny Welbeck goals got them that win, but the performance was not very good at all.
Sunderland 2-2 West Brom
These two teams can’t quite figure out what they are at the moment so a draw seemed like a fair result. James Morrison and Shane Long made it 2-0 for West Brom but Niklas Bendtner and Ahmed Elmohamady rescued a point for Sunderland.
Wolves 1-2 Newcastle
Fourth place Newcastle continued their excellent start away at Wolves with a 2-1 win. Demba Ba scored again but Jonas Guttierez made it two with an awesome run and finish. Steven Fletcher pulled one back and Kevin Doyle should’ve tied it but the linesman ruled that the ball had gone out of play before it was crossed into Doyle’s path. Wolves got hosed in this one as a foul inside the box earlier in the match was simply given as a free kick outside the area.
Bolton 1-5 Chelsea
It seems like Bolton couldn’t have had a tougher start to the season. Their loan star from last year, Danny Sturridge, scored early on and Chelsea never looked back. Frank Lampard scored his first before Sturridge scored again and fair play to the young Englishman for not celebrating in front of the Bolton fans. Lampard scored again before the first half to make it 4-0. Boyata got one for Bolton but Frank Lampard got his hat trick and the game finished at an embarrassing 5-1 for Bolton.
Fulham 6-0 QPR
QPR got absolutely rocked in this one as Clint Dempsey, Danny Murphy, and Bobby Zamora scored while Andrew Johnson got a hat trick. This was Fulham’s first win of the season and what a way to get it.
Swansea 2-0 Stoke
Stoke has now lost both league matches on the back of their first two Europa League encounters. Scott Sinclair and Danny Graham were the two goals scorers as Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea put in another strong performance at home.
Tottenham 2-1 Arsenal
This North London derby was full of attacking football, controversy, fouls, and great goals, what else is new? Tottenham started the match extremely well but could not get the opening goal until Rafa van der Vaart controlled a diagonal ball and finished neatly between two Arsenal defenders. It may have been a handball but nonetheless, it was 1-0 at the break. Arsenal came right back and Aaron Ramsey leveled it in the 51st minute, finishing Alex Song’s cross. But it was Spurs and Kyle Walker’s day as he got the winner and the biggest goal of his career so far.
So the two Manchester teams stayed at the top and Chelsea remained close behind with Newcastle still in a Champions League place. Team of the week, however, is going to Fulham for their great display of finishing. Andy Johnson could get player of the week for his hat trick against Fulham but how about Frank Lampard for that award. A three-goal performance isn’t a bad way to momentarily silence the critics of the Chelsea legend, huh?
