Wondo and Zusi Show
Wondo and Zusi Show
Posted by Gio Franco

Saturday afternoon was sunny and bright, especially in terms regarding the display from both Chris Wondolowski and Graham Zusi. Leading up to the match that afternoon USA head coach challenged his players to remain calm at the back. Even when they are being pressed hard in their own half of the field. The defense on Saturday also endured a clean sheet and was able to calmly able to find simple passes out of pressure. Although the stars and stripes were victorious, there is still a lesson to be had with this win.

When USA kicked off Saturday at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, it didn't take long for the stars and stripes to get on the score sheet. In the fourth minute Graham Zusi sent in a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box for Davis to knock back into the danger area for Chris Wondolowski to capitalize. The stars and stripes during the first half found it rather difficult to find a systematic rhythm. At the start of the second half USA were able to find a groove to establish them in. The call for calm by Klinsmann was definitely heard and was the note amongst the squad as they were eager to find each and every outlet pass.

The second half brought about a rhythm of confidence amongst the squad on the field. In the 60th minute Zusi again was able to play Donovan in the box, which Donovan intelligently played the ball back into space for Wondolowski to bag his brace. When it came down to finding space all along the pitch, team USA was not only able to discover space but they did so astutely. When the lads needed to pass the ball out of pressure into space, they accomplished that with some kind of ease. At times though the Warriors were almost able to pin the stars and stripes back into their own half, and forcing a few slight passes back out of the pressure.

Food for thought for the red-white and blue though, many anticipated a more forceful display by USA on the score line. Considering all the opportunities that were made during the game and not capitalized on. Regards to a separate issue for head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, player selection. When the day comes for Klinsmann to pick a final 23-man squad for the World Cup. Who will stay and who will go to Brazil? After the display Saturday afternoon, the combination of Landon Donovan, Graham Zusi, and Chris Wondolowski shows a fair amount of attacking promise. But where would it leave the Americans who are abroad, Clint Dempsey, Alejandro Bedoya and Jermaine Jones.

The one thing that must come to Jurgen Klinsmann's mind and on the minds of all the fans of the stars and stripes is who should he take to Brazil, to square off in that grueling group G.
