Rangers lose at Rugby Park while Celtic thrash St Mirren 5-0 to reduce the gap at the top of the league to only four points. The tides appear to be turning in the SPL as in less than a week Celtic reduce their deficit by more than a half. Only a fortnight ago it looked as if any hope of Celtic delivering the league title this season was dead in the water, but with only four points now separating them from leaders Rangers, everything is up for grabs. With three Old Firms left to play it is impossible to say which of the two teams will eventually lift the trophy as, with the disparity that exists in the league, it will inevitably be largely decided by the three derbies left to play.
Killie achieved their first win against Rangers in all competitions since 1994. A back-header from their captain, Manuel Pascali, ensured a gritty win that the club will cherish. It was a gritty performance, in which both sides had many opportunities to put the game to bed, but eventually the underdogs prevailed and Rangers suffered their first defeat of the season. Gers’ Manager, Ally McCoist put the loss down to a lack of desire in the team, he told the club’s website, “We didn't play the game at a high enough tempo and we didn't show enough urgency to earn the three points.” He will hope that this is just a one-time occurrence and his side will be back to winning ways with haste.
Back in Glasgow, Celtic made short work of St Mirren in the closest thing you’ll see to a master class in Scottish football. Samaras finally bagged his first goal of the season after Saints’ keeper, Samson, failed to stop his long range effort before it crossed the line. Gary Hooper doubled the lead shortly afterwards, before completing his hatrick with two goals just after the break, taking his goal tally for the season up to 12. The goal rout was completed with an incredible solo effort from 18 year-old, home debutant, Dylan McGeouch, who weaved his way through the St Mirren defence before stylishly slotting home to end the game 5-0.
Elsewhere in the league, at the bottom of the table, Dunfermline partook in another 3-3 thriller, this time with Aberdeen, who have yet to win an away game in the league this season. Motherwell dropped two points in a goalless draw at home to Dundee Utd, placing them five points off the top two. St Johnstone and Hearts both continued their good runs of form with wins over Hibs and Caley Thistle respectively.
This coming week will see Celtic visited by Atlético Madrid on Wednesday before playing Dundee Utd at the weekend; Rangers face Dunfermline; Hearts host St Johnstone and Hibs travel to Motherwell.
