It's great to be back first and foremost. We jump back in to the swing of things immediately. The boys were refreshed and recharged and full of news that they wanted to rant and rave about. The question was where to begin.
Right off the bat, Steven and Kenny jumped into the crumbling club that is Chelsea FC. Poor James our Audio Engineer is not “having a laugh” anymore. In fact, he no longer comes to work smiling, rather he joins us everyday talking about his beloved Ducks from the NHL who are at least doing well.
If you ask Steven what his thoughts were on his former club, “They're done!” he says. “Chelsea will finish 5th this year, just as I predicted at the beginning of the season”.
Kenny doesn't quite agree completely. He does believe that Chelsea will not retain the title this year, and he continues to slag-off John Terry who although scoring the third goal for Chelsea, his ineptitude leading the back line, also let in the third goal for a struggling Aston Villa side.
Without dwelling on the Wigan draw, the boys went back to talk about the Arsenal beating Chelsea and whipping Birmingham more recently. The question is whether or not Manchester United will slip up. Arsenal also have a big mid-week fixture against Manchester City Millionaires who will visit the Emirates this week. This match will really spice up the title chase for sure.
On today's show we kicked things off with our good friend and Chief Liverpool Football writer (for both sides of Merseyside), Rory Smith from the Telegraph. Although for the most of the beginning of the interview, we keep on the Chelsea and Arsenal debate. They discussed whether or not Chelsea would open the purse during this January transfer window, whether or not Roman will be the owner of Chelsea next year, and just how far they will go in the Champions League. When they asked him about whether Arsene was to blame for Arsenal not winning trophies, his response was that “Arsenal tend to build for tomorrow, where United and Chelsea tend to want to win today”. The problem with Arsenal and Arsene is that they are not always focused at the task at hand.
Next on, Paul MacDonald of Goal.com, their Spanish La Liga correspondent. With five games from Sunday and a whole slate of game for Monday, Paul was perfect to have on and break down the current state of La Liga. Although with Paul being a Scot, we had to touch on the 40th Anniversary of the Ibrox Disaster and the Old Firm on Sunday. Our final guest of the day is Ross Dunbar, ESPN Soccernet blogger for Rangers, who also recapped the Old Firm with it's touching ceremonies and paid respect for the 66 lives that where lost on January 2nd, 1971. Both sides where lead out of the tunnel by their respective club captains during that time period, as well as a minute of silence before kick off. All together, it was a very respectable remembrance from both clubs and their supporters, however depressing the 0-2 loss Rangers suffered at home.
Tons more to come from WFD this week including Tom Dart of the Times, the ESPN Soccernet Fulham Blogger Phil Mison, and the Ligue 1 Talk writer Dave Trotter all on Tuesday. We have the two host of Followtonians who recently interviewed Landon Donovan on Wednesday and Thursday. Rebecca Lowe joins us Wednesday and the US Soccer legend Taylor Twellman will joins us on Thursday. Do stay tuned in.
