Celtic Triumph in Scottish Cup Final
Celtic Triumph in Scottish Cup Final

Celtic took home their first trophy since 2009 with a 3-0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden on Saturday. After the disappointed of losing the league to Rangers last weekend, it was vital for the Glasgow side to win the cup for their season not to be an utter failure. For both Celtic and Rangers no season is seen as a great success for the team that loses the league but the Scottish Cup is the second best thing and provided Neil Lennon with his first silverware as manager of the club.

The Parkhead side dominated Motherwell over the 90 minutes with fantastic goals from both Ki Sung-Yeung and Charlie Mulgrew, as well as an own goal from Motherwell captain Stephen Craigan. The Korean had one of his best games in a Celtic shirt and rightfully picked up the man of the match award after the game.

Although not the most successful season for Celtic in terms of silverware, Celtic have benefited this season from building a new backbone to their side; new signings such as Gary Hooper, Emilio Izaguirre, Beram Kayal and perhaps most notably Kris Commons have vastly improved the team. They will hope next season to prevent Rangers from getting a fourth successive title.

Celtic's majority shareholder has said that Neil Lennon will be promised a long-term contract shortly. Lennon has had a turbulent season to say the least, involving death threats, attempted parcel bombings, bullets being sent to his home, all of which have resulted in him being kept under 24-hour police surveillance for his own safety. It is unlikely that next season he or his nemeses will quieten down and with Ally McCoist taking charge of Rangers, things are only going to get more nasty between the two clubs and their fans.

Scotland will have four teams in Europe next season, Rangers will have to play two play-offs to get into the group stages of the Champions League as a result of Scotland losing its coefficient to Belgium. Celtic, Hearts and Dundee United will in turn have to play one, two and three play-offs to get into the Europa League. It is largely based on who they get in the draw but it is very likely that at least two of the four clubs will not reach their desired competitions which will cause further damage to the coefficient which is in dire need of at least one club to have a decent run in either the Champions League or, more likely, the Europa League.
