Day two of the New Year for World Football Daily. Once again we had a great show, loaded with guests. But before we got stuck in with our guests, the boys covered the current events from the world of football. The thing that Steven had to rant about first is one of his favorite topics, Mr. David Beckham. After reading tons of articles on this possible loan deal for David to play at Spurs until the start of the MLS season, Steven came to this conclusion: “Everything about this deal from the David Beckham perspective says ego, selfishness, and he doesn't care about anybody but himself.” Cohen goes on to say that “it isn't about the love of the game, it's about breaking Shilton's record”.
Eventually the boys moved on to other topics like the midweek matches in England. Fulham face a must win game at Craven Cottage against West Bromich Albion. (We will get more of a Fulham perspective when we speak to Phil Mison) Our friends at Birmingham City face a must win against an upstart Blackpool squad who look to reach the safety point in the tables of about 32 points. Manchester United have a tricky fixture at home against Stoke City. Then the boys toss about the idea of actually moving the MLS season to follow the rest of the world by having it run through the dead of winter. Before they get to the guests, they quickly discussed the signing of new Inter Milan Manager Leonardo. Kenny made sure to point out how whoever took over Jose Mourinho's position would have a hell of a time proving his worth and as soon as there was a slip or a chink in the armor, that person would be dissected under the microscope from anyone and everyone. To be honest, it almost makes you feel bad for Rafa Benitez.
Our first guests was the ESPN Soccernet Blogger for Fulham FC, Mr. Phil Mison who is actually attending the Fulham v WBA match tonight. The main reason we bring on Phil is to dissect just where Fulham have gone wrong this season compared to last. After making it to the Europa League Final against Atletico Madrid, they now see themselves in a relegation battle. When posed the question of where Fulham have gone wrong from last year to this year, Mison responded by saying that “(Fulham) haven't rebuilt the midfield. The engine room at the club in not firing”.
Mison was more than correct when he made that statement. He actually goes as far to say that Roy Hodgson recognize this weakness in the summer, but when Liverpool came calling and he left, the club did not have the time to rebuild their midfield and instead are left with an aging Murphy and a noneffective Duff. In fact, by this point in the season last year, Duff and Murphy combined for a dozen goals, where this year, they have yet to score a goal between them. Mison and the boys really take the time to breakdown his club inside-out, including letting us know the relationship between the manager and the chairman, and the team and the manager. For more, listen to the interview or check out his work here.
Next on the guest list, we were joined by Tom Dart of the Times in London. The man is a wizard when it comes to cover the top flight across England and Steven and Kenny really try to grill him on the issues that matter. Steven started with the tough questions by asking Tom what is going wrong with Chelsea. “After speaking with Carlo, he says the (Chelsea) need players”. The only problem is that Tom wasn't sure if “they will be able to buy anybody worth making a difference for Chelsea for the price Roman will be willing to spend”. Cohen went on to ask what was the one thing that turned the Chelsea season. “Injuries and not enough squad depth at Chelsea. Their players with potential are simply not ready to make an impact. Chelsea have become a pretty average side.”
Kenny was more concerned with Liverpool and their Manager Roy Hodgson. “With all that is against Roy right now at Liverpool”, Kenny asked, “why doesn't he leave?”
“Pure pride” replied Tom. As any manager who is down in the Premiership, their pride is what keeps them going.
The boys went on to get Tom's opinion on David Beckham's possible move to Spurs and Tom Dart really seemed to think that Becks could add another dimension to the Tottenham squad for however long he was there. They also discussed the “sack-race” with regards to who might be out next. They also went into detail of the Edin Dzeko transfer which is not complete, but Manchester City has agreed to terms with the Bosnian player. Dzeko should sign by tonight or tomorrow.
Last to join the show, guest-wise, was a new addition to the show in Dave Trotter, the American writer who covers the French Ligue 1 for his site Ligue1talk.com. Although the French league is in the middle of their winter break, there is still a lot going on in the incredibly entertaining league where there is no outright leader in the tables. The Champions League draw for French teams is the first topic of discussion for our new guest.
Steven made sure to point out the rematch between Lyon and Real Madrid. According to Trotter Lyon really have a chance to move on. Lyon have started off slowly, but they have since picked it up and can really give Mourinho and Real Madrid a run for their money. As for the Marseille v Manchester United tie, although Marseille are no pushovers, United have a better chance of moving on than if they had drawn Lyon. “Marseille are not a strong home team”, but Trotter warned, “Fergie shouldn't take them for granted.”
The incredible thing (also the entertaining thing) about Ligue 1 is that the team from 1-10 are only separated by 5 points. The supporters of Ligue 1 love this fact. “They love that at the beginning of the matchday, no one knows who will take over the lead.” Dave quoted this from his recent interview with Matt Spiro. “We see the superstars of tomorrow in today's matches”. For more on Ligue 1 or the French Ligue 1 commentator interview of Matt Spiro, check out Dave's site, Ligue1Talk.com.
Finally, the boys call upon the Aussie Arsenologist, Nick Mason for a little mid-week “I know the Score”. Check out the boys picks by going to the highlights section of the worldfootballdaily.com website. We look forward to Rebecca Lowe and Eric Howell of Followtonians tomorrow. Thursday we will have Eric's partner in podcasting, Ped, as well as Taylor Twellman to discuss his plans for life after soccer. Do tune in for all the action.
