It's Wednesday and World Football Daily hits the midway point of the week in full stride. It's also been an incredibly long day for myself. My morning started dark and early at 2:45am as I was looking to meet Steven at the studio to record a phone interview with PSV Eindhoven Manager, Fred Rutten at 4am. Unfortunately, PSV had to reschedule the interview and we are hoping to speak with Fred on Thursday morning around the same time. PSV are currently in Spain training and taking part in friendly matches during their winter break from the Dutch Eredivisie.
With that said, Steven went back to bed and it was a Kenny solo show as Howard is busy with a dentist appointment. No problem though, there was a packed show for the Scotsman to deal with. Before we jumped into the guest, Kenny took the opportunity to break down a Scottish League on Steroids... also known as La Liga. After a bit of anoraking, Kenny lays it out with the statistics and figures to prove his point that La Liga is not what everyone thinks. 70% of La Liga champions are either Real Madrid or Barcelona, leaving not much for the remainder of the 18 teams that make up the table. 10 of those times we find either Real Madrid or Barcelona finishing as runner up to their major rivals. The statistics speak for themselves.
We kick off our guests today with Bobby McMahon of the Fox Soccer Channel and Soccer Report Extra. Bobby has always been a good friend of the show and actually took a ride in the back of my truck after we took him to lunch one time while he was taping a Champions League Special for FSC here in Los Angeles. We then went on to kick the ball about in the parking lot of the studio, but I digress.
Bobby is quite refreshing and we had a lot to discuss with the Scotsman. The man bring's a certain level-headed, cool perspective when reflecting on the major events in football around the world and the chemistry that Bobby has with both of the hosts is incredibly natural. The Scots tackled the transfer news first with Bobby coming to the conclusion that the January transfer window is necessary, but often times, “it can't live up to the hype that the media often builds up”.
Bouncing around Europe, Bobby and Kenny tried to predict how the major clubs around the world are planning to build up and strengthen their squads. Whether it was the Beckham loan scandal (cause that is what it has turned into), or the AC Milan back line, we jumped from league to league to broadly cover the clubs you wanted to hear about.
Bobby also asked whether or not it was possibly for Kenny Dalglish to be passed up by the game. His response is that the only way you can be passed up by the game is if you allow yourself to be passed up. But the fact that Dalglish has been so involved in football since leaving his last managerial position, leads Bobby to believe that he is more than capable righting the ship. Altogether, the boys spent 30 minutes talking football, and the interview is well worth the listen when you have a chance.
Next, we brought on two new guests to the show. Stefan Bienkowski of “The Oval Log” and Julian De Martinis of “The World Cup Blog”. Stefan, a Celtic supporting Glaswegian, talked about the “alternative leagues” around Europe, including the Belgium League, the Eredivisie, and even the Swedish top flight of football. But what was most refreshing was the fact that two the two Old Firm supporters were able to civilly debate the progression and set-backs of the two Glasgow powerhouse clubs. Julian was another breath of fresh air the way he broke down the AS Roma squad. Everything from the Olympic Stadium to the owners of the clubs, Julian was able to talk about it all. And as a Serie A fanatic, Kenny grilled young Julian on all things Serie A and the boy did well to hold his own.
Steven and I will try again at getting Fred Rutten on our show Thursday morning. So cross your fingers as we get up to the studio by 4am PST to record the discussion with the PSV Eindhoven Manager. If you are up for it, we will stream the interview live. We also bring on Premier League Commentator Craig Burley, “The Bundesliga Podcast” host Dan Levy, and Writer for “The Ball is Round Blog” Stuart Fuller. Make sure to tune in to catch it all!
