Part-time Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish will be optimistic of securing the role on a long-term basis after he guided his side to an excellent 1-0 over reigning champions Chelsea.
Prior to his appointment, some considered him too old and, having been out of the game for some time, many questioned his tactical nous. Both doubts were laid to rest as his footballing brain kicked into to stifle a static Chelsea side and emerge victorious from a hostile atmosphere at Stamford Bridge.
Prior to the match, all of the talk had been about Fernando Torres; his £50 million transfer set chins wagging on both sides and the Spaniard was duly handed his debut in a blue shirt. Torres was substituted after 67 minutes and left no impact on the match; something which cannot be said of Dalglish.
As Raul Meireles pounced upon a Chelsea defensive mistake and drove the ball goalwards, Kenny Dalglish leant forward in anticipation. The rippling of the net was met with a youthful joyous leap that rolled back the years for the Anfield faithful and their hero.
Aside from astute knowledge of the game, King Kenny has been able to turn the club around and put them in with a realistic chance of at least a Europa Cup place by sheer force of personality. He exudes a confidence that is felt through the supporters and the players. Anfield rocks upon his presence; something which cannot be said of previous boss Roy Hodgson.
His influence can be seen in the like of Meireles and Lucas; both players were criticised under Hodgson but have excelled recently in their Liverpool shirts. Lucas has been a model of passing consistency will the Portuguese international has shown a desire to be involved and get forward that the entire team was lacking under the previous management.
Having got his tactics spot on against Chelsea and helped revive what was considered a dead season, there can surely be no other candidate for the job. No other manager would be able to do what Dalglish has done; it takes a special man to turn around a club by sheer personality and enthusiasm. When new signings Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll have established themselves in the side, the Liverpool team will win more games than it loses. The King has returned.
