It was craziness in the Premier League this weekend. There was goals a plenty and more dropped points by Manchester City. Chelsea and Tottenham won while Arsenal lost to heat up the race for fourth. Here is how the ten matches played out.
Manchester City 3-3 Sunderland
City came in having not lost or drawn a game at home all year. That streak would come to an end on Saturday when Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland drew three all with Roberto Mancini’s squad. Seb Larsson got the opener with a pass into the net that was just out of the reach of Joe Hart. Late in the half Edin Dzeko drew a penalty and Mario Balotelli put it home, but Sunderland came right back. Just before halftime, Nicklas Bendtner regained the lead for Sunderland with a textbook header. The Black Cats continued their great play and the goal scorers, Bendtner and Larsson, hooked up for their third and City looked out of it. The minutes kept passing and nothing was happening for the home side, until Balotelli struck again. He created a goal from nothing, this after he argued with Alex Kolorav over who should take a free kick. Kolorav had the next part to play as his daisy cutter of a shot leveled it for City. That was all they could muster and 3-3 is how it would end.
Aston Villa 2-4 Chelsea
It was 2-0 after 50 minutes thanks to Daniel Sturridge and Branislav Ivanovic and it seemed like Chelsea would just cruise to victory. Villa had other plans as James Collins headed home to pull one back. Just a few minutes later they were level as Marc Albrighton played in a brilliant ball that Eric Lichaj poked in. Two minutes later, Chelsea was ahead again when Fernando Torres flicked on for Ivanovic to head in. As the match wound down Torres would get a chance and bury it to make it 4-2 and end his Premier League goal drought.
Everton 2-0 West Brom
Everton is on fire right now and with Liverpool’s loss on Sunday, the Merseyside blues jumped their rivals in the table for the first time in a long time. A Gareth McCauley own goal and Victor Anichebe strike got the job done for David Moyes’ side.
Fulham 2-1 Norwich
Clint Dempsey provided a goal and an assist, to Damien Duff, to offset an Aaron Wilbraham goal for Norwich.
QPR 2-1 Arsenal
Arsenal came in on a seven match winning streak, so QPR should be no problem, right? Well, Mark Hughes’ boys had other plans. Adel Taarabt got the opening goal with a classy finish while Theo Walcott tied it up with a rebound of his own shot. In the second half QPR stayed the stronger team but Arsenal had chances. It was Jamie Mackie who finally created the winning goal, which Samba Diakite polished off. QPR gained an unbelievably valuable three points with this historic win.
Wolves 2-3 Bolton
This relegation battle turned out to be another fairy tale ending for Bolton, whose hobbled man, Fabrice Muamba, seems to be making progress. After an entire half of chances, Wolves finally took the lead when Michael Kightly scored after 53 minutes. Bolton then reeled off three straight goals: a Martin Petrov penalty, Marcos Alonso rebound, and Kevin Davies low shot. Matt Jarvis made it 3-2 for Wolves two minutes from time but it wasn’t enough. Wolves are in serious trouble.
Wigan 2-0 Stoke
Stoke have had some very strange losses this season. This was a big one for Wigan though, so lets give them credit. It took awhile but Antolin Alcaraz finally put them ahead in the 55th minute. Victor Moses added a stoppage time goal to finish off the Potters.
Newcastle 2-0 Liverpool
Liverpool’s free fall continued on Sunday at St. James’ Park as Newcastle put the Reds to the sword. Two Papiss Demba Cisse goals on either side of halftime made sure that the Geordie fans would go home happy as their former striker, Andy Carroll, was subbed early. Pepe Reina would be sent off for a headbutt on James Perch and left back, Jose Enrique, would play goal the rest of the match to cap off an embarrassing day for Liverpool.
Tottenham 3-1 Swansea
The Spurs skid had to end this weekend against Swansea at home, and Harry Redknapp and co made sure it did. Rafa van der Vaart scored the first of the game to give Tottenham a halftime lead. In the second half Gylfi Sigurdsson made it level but Emmanuel Adebayor scored on two headers in the 72nd and 85th minutes to get Spurs back on track over the Swans. The neutral had to enjoy this free flowing game between two attack minded sides.
Blackburn 0-2 Manchester United
United did what United does. After 80 minutes of frustration and good defending from Blackburn, Antonio Valencia came up with a terrific goal that honestly looked like a low cross. A gorgeous Ashley Young finish to put a bow on a game that didn’t really deserve one, followed Valencia’s bullet. This team just finds a way to get it done.
United is now five points clear of City while Arsenal and Tottenham are tied for third with Chelsea five points back of them. The bottom three now contains Blackburn, Wigan, and Wolves. This weeks team of the week goes to Newcastle and their validating win over struggling (understatement) Liverpool. Player of the week goes to new Geordie hero, Papiss Demba Cisse, for his brace against the aforementioned Liverpool. Seven to go.
