Premier League Recap (April 21-22)

All 20 teams were in action on an old fashioned Saturday-Sunday weekend in the Premier League. Here is how those games played out.

Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea

In a battle of Champions League hopefuls, the neutral was the one who was left disappointed. This wasn’t necessarily a boring 0-0 but one that could’ve been so much more. Chelsea really needed three points and Arsenal could’ve used them, but the Gunners have to be the ones who will go home satisfied with a point.

Aston Villa 0-0 Sunderland

Neither of these teams really needed this game. In fact, it was the most meaningless game of the weekend and the 0-0 score signified that statement.

Blackburn 2-0 Norwich

Norwich really doesn’t have much to play for anymore while Blackburn has everything to play for. That’s why this 2-0 victory had the home fans cheering deliriously. Mauro Formica and David Hoilett scored for Blackburn to see off the visiting Canaries. Well done, but there is plenty more work for Steve Kean to do if he wants another season in the league.

Bolton 1-1 Swansea

Thankfully, Fabrice Muamba is recovering well and looks like he might get to return to a normal life. Unfortunately, for Bolton, his near tragedy has put them behind in matches played. The Wanderers got a point on Saturday when Chris Eagles nullified an early Scott Sinclair strike, but Owen Coyle’s boys still remain in the drop zone. The two games in hand now only help if they can get something from them.

Fulham 2-1 Wigan

So Wigan beats Manchester United and Arsenal then loses to Fulham? I guess this is what makes this league exciting, but still. Emmerson Boyce gave Wigan the lead but Pavel Pogrebnyak came right back and leveled things for Fulham. Then just a minute from the full time whistle, Phillipe Senderos got the winner for the Cottagers and ended Wigan’s impressive streak.

Newcastle 3-0 Stoke

Alan Pardew’s men just keep rolling along. Saturday’s win over Stoke was their sixth in a row and fourth place is a very real target for the club. The goal scorers Yohan Cabaye (twice) and Papiss Cisse, were fantastic all afternoon along with Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba. The attacking talent rivals any of the teams around them and with a game in hand on Arsenal, third place isn’t out of the question.

QPR 1-0 Tottenham

Spurs slide continued on Saturday with a 1-0 away loss at Loftus Road. QPR maverick, Adel Taarabt, kept himself busy with a great free kick that turned out to be the winner, and a red card in the second half. Rangers held strong, however, and a goal never came from Tottenham. QPR are that much closer to another year in the EPL.

Manchester United 4-4 Everton

This was the match of the season, for me. This past week I had voted on the 20 year Premier League awards and was reminded of a 4-4 that took place a few years ago between Liverpool and Arsenal. All I wanted was another one of those, and if it affected the title race, even better. Well, I got that match and it definitely affected the title race. Everton jumped out to a lead when Nikica Jelavic scored but a Wayne Rooney strike would make sure the score was level at halftime. Danny Welbeck then gave United the lead with a perfectly struck curling shot. Nani then made it 3-1 with a chipped finish after some great movement from Welbeck and Rooney. The Toffees fought back and Marouane Fellaini (who was probably the man of the match) hit a volley past David de Gea. It was 4-2 after Rooney tapped in and you would think that was that. Everton had something more to give and Jelavic, then Steven Pienaar, improbably made it 4-4 with 5 minutes to go. It would stay that way after Fergie time and Everton would claim a famous away point. Title race still on.

Liverpool 0-1 West Brom

The home form at Anfield has been dreadful all season and Saturday was no different. A Peter Odemwingie goal, 15 minutes from time, gave West Brom all three points. How West Brom didn’t allow a goal in this match is beyond me. The Reds racked up 28 shots on goal and had 15 corners! Just like Barcelona found out against Chelsea last week, though, the game is about taking chances. Liverpool is in danger of falling out of the top eight.

Wolves 0-2 Manchester City

You have to believe that once City caught wind of the United draw, they would be licking their chops at getting to feast on last placed Wolves. Well, it wasn’t the 5-0 drubbing some might have expected, but it got the job done. Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri scored on either side of halftime to give Man City the win.

So it is all to play for at the Etihad next Monday. This has to be the biggest Manchester derby of all time. I can’t wait for that game but as for this weekend’s top performers, I am going with Yohan Cabaye of Newcastle and Everton as the team of the week for not rolling over after being down by two goals two different times at Old Trafford. That was a wild game to wrap up a pretty eventful weekend. Only three more to go.
