Dortmund dashes Zenit's CL hopes

Tuesday evening in St Petersburg it took Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund side five minutes to go two goals ahead of Zenit. The match Tuesday in Russia was one of technical skill and physical strength. Klopp would be rather pleased with his side, as it took Dortmund four minutes to strike their first goal. A commanding run by Marco Reus into the Zenit box, in fact barely staying on his feet enduring a tackle from Lombaerts. Reus attempted to stay on his feet and keep the ball in play enough for Henrik Mkhitaryan to assume control and smash it past Lodygin. The nightmare would continue right after for the St Petersburg defense, as Reus grabbed the second for Dortmund just seconds after the first goal.

St Petersburg manager Luciano Spalleti was reluctant of getting to half time in order to reorganize his squad. It took 12 minutes from the second half restart when Shatov pulled back a goal, after Hulk’s forced goal line clearance from Schmelzer and Rondon rattled the inside post. The ball finally fell to Shatov, which he was quick to send it in despite the chaos in the Dortmund box. Dortmund's two-goal cushion was quickly restored after Zenit's first goal. Lukasz Piszczek found Lewandowski in the box and the Polish combo netted Dortmund's third. The match was quickly turned into a spectacle when Piszczek was booked for obstructing Fayzulin and the referee was quick to point to the spot and show yellow to Lukasz. Hulk stepped up to the spot and cannoned his spot kick into the top right hand corner of the net, making it 2-3 to the visiting Germans. In just two minutes from Hulk's penalty in the 69th minute Zenit again was shell-shocked. Reus combined with Lewandowski inside the 18-yard box and Robert Lewandowski powered a low shot into the lower left hand side of the net.

The match ended in a 2-4 lost for the home team, a rather commanding set up for Borussia Dortmund in two weeks when they entertain St Petersburg. If Zenit were to progress to the next round of the Champions League they will need a stroke of luck and vigilance. Luck will help coincide the fortune the Germans had in Russia Tuesday evening. Vigilance, well Zenit at many times was complacent which allowed Dortmund to capitalize on the Russian's stagnant play. In all it might as well be called mission impossible for the Russian outfit, but Football does have its miracles, these miracles are the reason why we watch the Beautiful Game.
