"Ay dios mío Luis!" Liverpool's Uruguayan cannot stay out of the headlines of late. Not for the right reasons some might say, but I wouldn't say necessarily for the bad. The racism claim by Patrice Evra I can not speak upon really, for I don't know what really happened. Yet on in Monday's fixture against Fulham, Luis Suarez flipped the bird in the direction of the Fulham fans and that for me shows his drive.
There is no hiding that Suarez is emotional, he's bloody South American. When results don't go his way he acts like a child that has dropped his sweets, moaning, rolling on the floor and banging the pitch in anger. People call him a diver, but he is no more a diver than any other speedy, skillful forward out there. Remember when that Ronaldo fellow played for United…say that he was not ten times worse. Look at Drogba, he's ridiculous, seen some years ago having a diving competition with then Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann…disgraceful. When I watch his antics I feel secure because it shows what the results mean to him. Looking back to Fernando Torres' demeanor in his final days at Anfield, he couldn't be bothered. Suarez's drive to win is unparalleled, and I like it. I won't say that giving Fulham's fans the finger is necessarily appropriate behavior but it doesn't bother me. The FA looks to charge the Uruguayan, but not from strong opposition from his manager. People have been comparing it to Rooney's outburst at T.V.cameras last year, an offense that saw him suspended for two games. Dalgleish's commented on this in the The Guardian by saying,
"I don't see any similarities between the two incidents at all, saying they are a bit like each other is like saying a man is a bit like a woman. We have picked out at least four other instances that were just the same and the players were not charged. All we are asking for is some clarity on the matter."
The Uruguayans action was thoroughly justified after the frustration felt by all during Monday's game. We once again revisited the issue of dropping points to a team we should be beating. Fulham are no pushovers but in the grand spectrum of Liverpool we should be beating them. The omission of Lucas Leiva due to injury was evident, as young Jay Spearing took the helm in the middle of the park. This slightly blew up in our face, as in the 72nd minute Spearing dove in on Moussa Dembele, taking the ball cleanly, yet taking the player with his trailing leg. The replacement Midfielder saw a straight red for "dangerous play," as Dembele crumpled to the floor. The match commentator was as taken a-back as I was, saying that he was just about the call it a good ol' fashion tackle. What looked to be one of those good ol' fashioned ones, ended up being a straight red offense for referee Kevin Friend. Soft decision, but then again it's not to different from the tackle that saw Everton's Jack Rodwell sent off for in the Merseyside derby. This offense by Spearing earned Liverpool another charge from the FA requiring disciplinary action, as the tackle was deemed as reckless…excuse me while I chuckle over that.
Clint Dempsey won the game for Fulham in the 85th minute capitalizing on a 10-men Liverpool, after a blistering shot from Danny Murphy was fumbled by Reina in goal. This 1-0 win moves Fulham into 13th place, as Liverpool now sit in 7th. Fun fact: Liverpool have hit the post five times more than any other team in the Premier League, shots from Downing and Henderson made it 12 times on the season. Liverpool will be known as "The Red's" no more, from now in they will be called " The Postmen."
Unable to score, Liverpool will always be susceptible to letting one in and that is exactly what they did. Having just signed Suarez and Carroll and Bellamy, I ask with the January transfer window fast approaching if John Henry and Fenway Sports Group need to empty their piggy-banks again and shell out the clams for another striker. A Loan deal maybe….like a Lukaku from Chelsea, someone of that ilk. A fresh new signing especially a proven goal scorer might be a bit much at the moment but the ball needs to be put in the net, no-sooner than QPR this weekend. Ball in net proving a difficult equation for the Merseyside club, and it looks like we need a mathematician to solve it.
