After allegations surfaced that Garry Cook sent an inflamatory email to the mother of Manchester City defensive player, Nedum Onuoha, Cook resigned his post as CEO of the team. Dr. Anthonia Onuoha served as the agent for her son's contract negotiations, and had sent a number of emails to Cook discussing the process, and especially concerning a dispute over the status of Nedum's contract after a disagreement last October. Dr. Onuah stated in her email that she would continue to hold talks regarding the dispute, despite the fact that she was "ravaged with cancer." She received an email from Cook two weeks later, which appeared to make fun of her condition and make light of the situation.
Cook denied the fact that he ever sent the email, which was intended for Brian Marwood, City's football adminstrator. After the email became public, Cook then said that he was on holiday in South Africa, and somebody must have hacked into his email account and sent the email as a practical joke. Manchester City's board immediately launched an investigation into the allegations. The result of the investigation found validity in the claim, and soon thereafter, Cook resigned.
Cook stated, "I am privileged to have held my position at Manchester City and to have experienced the opportunities that it has presented. The privilege is in part offset however by the significant personal focus which has at times, detracted from the magnificent achievements of those working at the football club. It is that factor, together with my error of judgement in this matter that has prompted me to reach this decision, which I believe is in the best interests of the football club."
Garry Cook was brought to Manchester City by then owner Thaksin Shinawatra to replace Alistair Mackintosh in 2008. Cook had spent the previous 12 years working for Nike, and running the Brand Jordan project. New City owner Sheik Mansour ultimatley decided that the best thing for the club would be to move on and distance themselves from these controversies. Nedum Onuoha remains at the club, even though he does not appear to be a part of coach Roberto Mancini's plans. The 24 year old Onuoha signed a five year contract at Eastlands in 2009. The defenseman spent last season on loan at Sunderland, and has made a total of 72 league starts for Manchester City. Director John MacBeath will take over as temporary CEO while the board searches to find a permanent replacement.
Amidst all of the off-field controversy, Citeh continues to dominate on the field. After their 3-0 dismissal of Wigan on Saturday, Manchester City remains tied at the top of the Premier League, trailing Manchester United only on goal differential. City have taken maximum points through four games, and after Sergio Aguero's sublime hat-trick against Wigan, have outscored their opponents 15-3. An incredible start to a very promising campaign. City will begin their European quest as their first group game will see the Eastlands club host the offensive-minded Italian team, Napoli, and their dangerous attack force of Cavani, Lavezzi, Hamsik and crew on Wednesday. City will then look to make it five out of five as they play Fulham on Sunday.
Never a dull moment in the hearts of Manchester City fans. What will be the next controversy??? I predict it will have something to do with either Tevez or Balotelli, but that is not much of a stretch, is it?
