Colombian DP leads the goals scored in Liga Sagres

Waves are being made in the talent pool that is Portugal, and the ripples are coming from a Colombian on loan from the Seattle Sounders. Fredy Montero came to the Seattle Sounders in January of 2009 on loan from Deportivo Cali in Colombia. Montero made his debut March 29th 2009 against the New York Red Bulls, and scored the first and third goals in Sounders History. After early action of the European campaign Montero has aided Sporting Lisbon in their quest to challenge FC Porto for Liga Sagres glory.

With just two games being played in Portugal, Sporting Lisbon has finally thrown down the gauntlet to their neighbors Benfica and the Portuguese powerhouse of Football and wine, Porto. After the first week in Liga Sagres saw Sporting thrash Arouca 5-1 on opening day in Portugal. The talk of Lisbon was Fredy Montero the Colombian from the Seattle Sounders, netting an impressive hat trick for the Leoes. Montero enjoyed the debut of the Portuguese league starting against Arouca for Sporting. With the Colombian’s start Leonardo Jardim, head coach, was awarded with a hat trick and an obvious three points at home in Lisbon.

The second week saw the Lions travel north to Coimbra to take on Academica, in Sporting’s first away match of the new campaign. It didn’t take long for Sporting to grab the first goal in the 23rd minute of the match. Towards the latter stages of the game that turned to be a rout of Academica, Montero showed up to the party with a goal from the penalty spot to seal the win 4-0 for Sporting. During the match against Arouca, Montero’s off the ball movement was impeccable and with it led to him making chances out of nothing. With Fredy’s movement and chances he found the back of the net on four occasions.

Many large teams’ scouts use a variety of leagues through out the globe to determine upcoming talent today. Holland, France and Portugal have always been the talent pools where many stars came up through the ranks at many teams in these leagues. With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo coming from Sporting, Falcao from Porto, Moutinho from Sporting, show that Liga Sagres knows talent. Currently sporting sits on top of Liga Sagres and with their leading goal scorer Fredy Monetero, leading the league with four goals in two games. The real test lies just ahead of Fredy Montero and Sporting Lisbon, Benfica. Benfica has been enduring a somewhat slow start to the season to the contrary of Sporting’s current position. What better a time for a goal scorer to prove oneself than in derby against Sporting’s cross-town rival.
