Celtic's midweek loss away to Inverness CT and Rangers' 4-0 thrashing of Hearts on Sunday have as good as won Rangers the title; their third in three years. While Celtic managed a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock they are now relying on Rangers slipping up in either of their two final games for them to have any hope of returning the cup to Celtic Park.
Wednesday night saw Caley Thistle take full advantage of poor display by what looked like a tired Celtic side, who having only conceded twice in the previous seven games, let in three goals to the Inverness attack. It was a performance littered with individual errors and following the game Lennon admitted that his players had been "lazy" and that "at least two of the goals easily avoidable". Another negative Celtic came back to Glasgow with was the injury to Beram Kayal which will keep him out for two to three months, he will be sorely missed in the last few games of the season as he has fast become the linchpin of Celtic's midfield.
The Bhoys were hoping that third placed Hearts could send them a lifeline by getting something out of their visit to Ibrox on Saturday but they were out of luck. Hearts applied some early pressure but as soon as Jelavic put the ball in the back of the net there was only one possible outcome for the match. Strikes from Lafferty and Davis before the break took the score to 3-0 before Hearts captain Eggert Jonsson was sent off for a cynical challenge on Jelavic and then Ryan Stevenson turned the ball into his own net to seal the defeat for the Edinburgh side.
This win took Rangers four points clear of Celtic, who were playing on the Sunday, and the Ibrox crowd seemed confident of bringing home the SPL title for the third consecutive year. Hearts are on a poor run of form at the moment and should it continue they run the risk of losing the coveted Europa League spot with Dundee Utd hot on their heels.
As halftime approached at Rugby Park, it looked as if it might again just not be Celtic's day with two goals being disallowed for offside and Kilmarnock looking promising. However, a Scott Brown header in stoppage time in the first half gave the Glaswegian team hope going into the break. Their lead was doubled in the second half as Kris Commons scored his thirteenth goal for Celtic from 30 yards, a rocket that left the Killie keeper with no chance. All Celtic can now do is win their remaining two fixtures and hope that either Dundee Utd or Kilmarnock can get something out of their ties with Rangers.
Elsewhere in the league, Hamilton, who looked certain to go down several weeks ago, beat Hibernian 1-0 taking them within three points of safety. Dundee Utd continued their good form with a 4-0 win over Motherwell to maintain pressure on Hearts in third place. St Johnstone came away with a 2-0 vicory against Aberdeen at Pittodrie and St Mirren lost 1-0 to Inverness to continue their woeful form over the past few months.
