Three games into the Premier League season, and we have our first international break. Not only is it a fantastic chance to reflect on each club’s start to the campaign, but we get to see how England fare as Euro 2012 edges ever closer.
Fabio Capello has included no fewer than 11 Manchester based players in his squad, which I honestly believe bodes well for England’s hopes next summer. Not only are so many of them young with bright futures, but crucially, they can be bedded straight into the national team having that understanding that will have been formed at club level.
Down the years, England managers have always looked to include ‘partnerships’ in their squads – Michael Owen and Emile Heskey, for example – but having so many players from individual clubs certainly is rare.
It is almost comparable to the set-up that Spain has in place, where the majority of players come from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Okay, there could well be the inevitable tension that comes with a club rivalry, but in the modern game, when away on international duty, all the players will be pulling together for the same cause.
It is quite apparent that the Manchester sides will be formidable opponents to anyone this season. City’s 5-1 win over Tottenham was pretty special, but no one could have anticipated the 8-2 annihilation of Arsenal that United served up just hours later.
Without doubt, it will be hard for the ‘victims’ of those defeats to take, but as a neutral observer of the Premier League, and an avid England supporter, it made somewhat reassuring viewing. So many of the players that were on winning sides on Sunday will now be pulling on England shirts this week.
Supporters claiming their Euro 2012 Free Bet (http://euro2012onlinebetting.com/euro-2012-free-bets/) will surely note how Germany got on at the world cup with a team of young players. That could well be what happens with England, as the likes of Phil Jones, Tom Cleverley and the now injured Danny Welbeck push for inclusion in the squad that travels to Poland and Ukraine.
Bookmakers won’t make England Euro 2012 odds (http://euro2012onlinebetting.com/england/) on favourites, but who is to say that with the next generation of international stars coming through, they can’t be the dark horses of the competition? If they continue their form at club level, and develop as players, surely it will be to the benefit of the national team.
