Sometimes you wonder what you are going to write about and then Real Sociedad and Real Zaragoza go out and beat Barçalona and Real Madrid on the road. Granted Barça had ended with 3 players out of position on their backline, but any lineup with Gerard Piqué, Lionel Messi, and Xavi should get it done at Sociedad. This result in the grand scheme of things makes Sociedad’s road to La Liga next year pretty much ensured and creates a road of perfection needed for Barça to reach the 100 point mark and beat their all-time La Liga point record set last year. Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann, highly touted by GolTV’s and WFD regular Wayne Hudson, looks like a star in the making. It’ll be hard for Sociedad to turn down the millions that will be cast their way over the summer transfer period for his services. Same goes for Zabi Prieto. It would be great to see if they could hold on to these two, add some pieces, and compete for a Europa League spot next year.
Zaragoza needed it much more than Madrid, but Madrid playing home at the Bernabéu and with a squad eight players different than the loss on Wednesday still should have finished off Zaragoza. Madrid’s 2nd eleven is better than all of La Liga’s 1st eleven save Barça.
Are we surprised Madrid finished with ten men again?
José Mourinho would have been better suited to try and raise a conspiracy theory about the ‘powers that be” trying to undermine him rather than help Barça. Although that would be fantasy as well. Most folks aren’t fooled into thinking an aggressive, physical, and defensive style of play won’t produce fouls and thus cards and sendings-off. Does the Ricardo Carvalho’s dismissal mean that the ‘UEFA loves Barça’ conspiracy theory extend to La Liga? Do we really need to answer that? Here’s what I believe: the majority of the footballing world is not fond of Mourinho for his antics and for his teams’ styles of play. Because he is Mourinho, most say he is safe for at least another year in Madrid because of the Copa del Ray win. I am not so sure. If Barça win the double between La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, I think Madrid sacks him. The triple combination of having the world’s deepest roster and highest payroll, not winning either of the two big trophies, and not playing the traditional Madrid way will be too much.
What will happen in El Clásico Part IV? Could it get any worse than the debacle on last Wednesday? Yes and it will. What everyone wants to see is Mourinho give the green light to an attacking game to make-up the two goal deficit. I think the opposite will happen. You’ll see Madrid add simulation to the ultra-defensive tactics and fouling. Do we really think Mourinho will use a more open strategy that created a 5-0 loss earlier this season? My greatest fear is someone getting injured. Genuinely injured that is, Nigel Dejong karate kick style, not Dani Alves stretchered-off and running back on style. That or a full scale brawl on the pitch. Just about everything else happened in the last match. El Clásico Part IV will be more reality TV than sporting spectacle.
