Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has been called into Roy Hodgson’s England squad to face Ukraine on Tuesday evening in a World Cup qualifier.
Those looking at Liverpool news note how Sterling is just 17-years-old but has made a big impression in the opening three games of the Premier League for the Reds and now could feature for his country and become one of the youngest ever capped players.
Tottenham’s Jake Livermore and Southampton’s Adam Llanna have also been called up by Hodgson as Theo Walcott has returned to Arsenal with an injury and Daniel Sturridge is a doubt for the game with stomach cramps.
Both John Terry and Ashley Cole will also miss the encounter against Ukraine through injury and one of Phil Jagielka or Gary Cahill will come in play alongside Joleon Lescott on Tuesday.
It seems that the England boss is keen to give young players chance to be involved in the national side, he said: "It was a good opportunity to invite some young players to come in and be part of the atmosphere.”
The Three Lions captain Steven Gerrard, who is of course a teammate of Sterling’s, has backed the decision to include him in the squad.
“I think he deserves this call-up. The impact he's made has been sensational. He's been one of our shining lights. The important thing is he keeps his feet on the ground. I think it won't be long before he's in the set-up for real." Gerrard said.
Anyone studying Premier League news will note how both Sterling and Lallana are uncapped at international level, but Livermore made his first England appearance when he came on as a substitute against Italy in the 2-1 friednly victory last month.
After the 5-0 drubbing of Moldova on Friday evening, confidence is sure to be sky high in the England camp and it is likely that Hodgson will name the same side that started that match, which the exception of whoever replaces the injured John Terry.
The three players drafted in to the squad could make appearances, however it is more likely that they will just be given the experience of being in the squad and seeing how the England team works.
