Adam Johnson's Premier League Awards

It has been a wild season in the Barclays Premier League with plenty of storylines and young stars rising up all over the place. Manchester United was probably the most consistent team and deserved the title. Chelsea and Manchester City locked up the Champions League group stage spots while Arsenal went from first to fourth in a couple months and will have to qualify through the playoffs. The relegation battle was hot all season with teams in the bottom half only separated by a few points. All of those things are great but let’s get to what this post is all about, the awards. Everyone has an opinion on these at this time of year so here is mine…

Manager of the Season- Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United

You cannot deny what Fergie has done this season. Many say this United team is the worst winners of the league in awhile but he doesn’t care about that. He kept everybody involved and got another great season out of Ryan Giggs. His team was the best defensively in the Premier League and they won most of the games they had to. It looks like he hasn’t lost any of the joy he got out of winning 30 years ago.

Goal of the Season-Rooney gets on his bike, Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City

We have all seen it by now and what a goal it was. 1-1 against their cross town rivals, United needed someone to step up and Rooney was that guy. His bicycle kick gave Man United the lead in a game they needed to win. This goal may have lifted Manchester United to their record breaking 19th title.

Game of the Season- Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal

When I was watching this game I thought, I have never seen anything like this, and apparently no one had ever seen anything like it. No one in the Premier League era has ever come back from down four to get a win or a draw until this game. Theo Walcott, Johan Djorou, and two from Robin van Persie put Arsenal up 4-0 after 26 minutes. In the second half Newcastle came out strong but the mountain to climb was a steep one. They got one on a Joey Barton penalty then another from Leon Best. Arsenal started to look nervous and even more so when Barton converted another penalty in the 82nd minute. Then in the 87th minute Cheik Tiote hit a volley on what was probably the runner up for goal of the season. St. James’ Park was going nuts and Arsenal looked mentally fragile once again.

Young Player of the Season-Gareth Bale, Tottenham

This is the award Bale should’ve won. He had a brilliant start to the season and was a breath of fresh air. His pace and athleticism brought a new aspect to Tottenham’s game and when he was out of the lineup through injury it showed in Spurs’ results. He has a great career ahead of him.

Player of the Season-Nemanja Vidic, Manchester United

Vidic was the stalwart at the back for United’s title winning team. He was the most consistent player on the best team in the league so this award makes sense. There wasn’t a standout player for this award so Vidic it is.
