Because of the FA Cup semi’s this weekend, there were only six Premier League games played from Saturday to Monday. The Manchester clubs were in action, however, so here is a recap of those six games plus the two semi-finals at Wembley.
Liverpool 2-1 Everton (FA Cup Semi)
The Merseyside derby made its way to Wembley on Saturday and a hero was made out of a man that has been a disappointment since making his way to Liverpool 15 months ago. That’s right, Andy Carroll, got the winner and will go down in history now as a player who scored to send Liverpool to yet another final. The match started quickly with both sides up for it but the tempo slowed before Everton took the lead. It was Nikica Jelavic who pounced on a mistake from Jamie Carragher and Martin Skyrtel to put the Toffees in front. Not to be outdone by his Liverpool counterparts, Sylvain Distin made a huge mistake of his own when his backpass to Tim Howard was way under hit and Luis Suarez pounced and finished to make it 1-1. The second half wore on and it looked like extra time would be necessary. Then Carroll popped up and headed in a Craig Bellamy free kick to win it for the Reds. On to their second cup final of the season.
Norwich 1-6 Manchester City
This match started with lightning quick pace and Norwich actually looked like they would hang for a little while. Carlos Tevez scored the opener with an absolute screamer past John Ruddy but the Canaries kept coming. Unfortunately for them, Man City boasts an insane attack when all players are in the mood. Sergio Aguero used a brilliant Tevez back heel to make it 2-0 before halftime. Andrew Surman pulled one back for Norwich in the second half but then City kicked it into high gear. They exploded for four straight, two more from Tevez for a hat trick, one more for Aguero, and topped off by Adam Johnson. Job done for the blue side of Manchester.
Sunderland 0-0 Wolves
Wolves need any points they can get but they are down already so what does it really matter? Plus, Sunderland isn’t playing for much at this point, hence a 0-0.
Swansea 3-0 Blackburn
This was exactly what Swansea needed to bounce back from a couple of poor matches. Blackburn came in need of points but got none as the Swans were back to their passing selves. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer scored fine first half goals to combine with a Scott Dann own goal in the second half to make it three goals and three points for Swansea.
West Brom 1-0 QPR
QPR’s 1-0 loss at West Brom was just another team in the relegation zone that lost this weekend. Graham Dorrans, in the 22nd minute, let loose a blast that would turn out to be the only goal of the game. Both sides created a plethora of chances but it stayed 1-0. Rangers sit two points clear at the moment but they need a few more points to survive to play in the Premier League next season.
Manchester United 4-0 Aston Villa
Ashley Young went down easily, again, and Wayne Rooney converted the penalty to open the scoring early for the Red Devils. Manchester United never looked back. Danny Welbeck made it 2-0 late in the first half and Rooney and Nani added second half goals to complete the romp.
Chelsea 5-1 Tottenham (FA Cup Semi)
The 5-1 score line that this match ended up having was not really fair to the team who suffered it. Wembley Stadium in the evening is a spectacle, as was Didier Drogba’s opening goal for Chelsea. He chested down a ball, used strength to hold off William Gallas, turned brilliantly, and then fired a bullet with his left foot that left Spurs’ keeper Carlo Cudicini with no chance. It stayed 1-0 until halftime but that lead was doubled, wrongly when someone for Chelsea bundled it “in”. Replays showed that the ball, bouncing around in a penalty box scramble, never crossed the line. Tottenham fans and players were pissed, rightly, but they fought back and Gareth Bale got them a goal to make it a game again. 20 minutes later, and with neither side really getting going, Ramires sealed the deal for Chelsea with a fantastic goal. Frank Lampard added a great free kick and Florent Malouda a tap in to wrap up a rout that may have never been if we only had goal line technology.
Arsenal 1-2 Wigan
This was an extraordinarily open first half. That was due to the fact that Wigan scored twice within the first eight minutes. The Emirates crowd was stunned as Franco di Santo and Jordi Gomez each netted to give Wigan a shock lead and shake Arsenal up. The Gunners started to throw everything at Wigan and eventually got a goal when Thomas Vermaelen rose to head home. It stayed 2-1 until halftime. Arsenal kept coming in the second half but Wigan held firm as Arsene Wenger (and his puffy, hysterically-long coat) grew more frustrated by the minute. The home side started to look tired after trying so hard to equalize. A special shoutout to Victor Moses, who looked great for Wigan and took players on every chance he could. This win edged Roberto Martinez’s men ever so much closer to safety.
Now we know that the FA Cup Final will be Chelsea v. Liverpool and that the race for the Champions League is back to four fighting for two. The Manchester clubs each held up their side of the bargain while Wigan gained a massive three points. These last four games are going to be thrilling.
