What Argentina learned from its three international friendlies
What Argentina learned from its three international friendlies

Nothing.

What happens when an international powerhouse plays a very good African team with their B team?  They get hammered (loss to Nigeria 4-1). What happens when that same B team plays a mediocre international team? Either a draw or a slim loss (loss to Poland 2-1).  What happens when that strong international team plays a pathetic European squad with their A team?  They demolish them (win against Albania 4-0).

All very predictable results.  Some may defend Batista’s choice in squad selection for these matches as looking to select his bench for the Copa America.  But why play them with no starters on the field?  How are you to measure their chemistry with the players you know will be on the field if none of them are present?  Thanks Batista, we were all just reminded why second tier players are second tier players… and another thanks for the 10th place FIFA ranking you just earned us.

Tongue-in-cheek aside, there were two small surprises in these few games.  Pablo Zabaleta’s performance with the B team was shocking.  Where was the Pablo we saw this past season at Manchester City? He, and the rest of his defensive line, allowed 6 goals in 2 games.  Those aren’t the stats of someone with designs on taking over Javier Zanetti’s position.

The other surprise was more pleasant.  Ever Banega’s link up with Messi in the Albania game was on point.  The way they pass to each other when setting up an attack is very reminiscent of Messi working with his club puppet master, Xavi.

Batista’s first team defense was not tested in the Albania game. Zanetti, Burdisso, Milito and Rojo were left twiddling their thumbs for 90 minutes thanks to the offensive pressure.  Under normal circumstances, I would say this may be his best possible choice for a back line given the options. However, we have a situation where Argentina’s captain just came off a club season where he displayed his remarkable versatility while helping secure a UEFA Champions League title.  Burdisso and Milito are pathetic.  Why not replace one of the two with Mascherano?  There are several other talented options to fill in for him in midfield.

Tomorrow Argentina opens the tournament against Bolivia.  Los Albiceleste will be looking to avenge their 6-1 loss to them under Maradona.  However, this time Bolivia will not have the altitude advantage they had in La Paz.  A loss to one of the weakest teams in the tournament on home soil will see Batista crucified.

Let the games begin.
