It could be that following a disastrous October for Celtic, in which they all but said goodbye to the league and any hope of progression from the group stages of the Europa League, there was simply nowhere else for Celtic's luck to turn. After a convincing 3-1 win in the midweek against French outfit, Rennes, Celtic continued their form into a 2-1 victory on Sunday away to Motherwell, reclaiming the second spot in the league for their own. While Rangers also won, a 3-1 victory over Dundee Utd, leaving them 12 points clear at the top of the league, a legal battle is brewing concerning Rangers finances, more specifically their somewhat dodgy owner, Craig Whyte. If matters concerning the clubs colossal debt are not resolved, there is every possibility of the club going into administration, which would immediately dock them ten points, but could hold far more dire consequences for the future of the club.
Celtic came from behind, with a brace from Anthony Stokes and a late goal from Gary Hooper, to snatch a much-needed 3-1 win in Glasgow in their Group I match-up against Rennes. The group is still very much in the balance, with Atlético Madrid and Udinese on 7 points, Celtic on 5 and Rennes on 2 with two matches left to play. It will be very impressive if Celtic are able to pull off a place last 32 of the Europa League, although Atlético and Udinese may prove difficult opponents to overcome.
Stokes and Hooper scored again on Sunday against Motherwell, as Celtic again came from behind to clinch the victory late on in the game. It was a vital three points for Celtic, and maybe more importantly a vital three points dropped for Motherwell who may have seen their opportunity of finally splitting the top two in Scotland dashed. The two teams are still joint on points but Celtic still have a game in hand and their goal difference of 12 dwarfs Motherwell’s of 1. Neil Lennon was angered by comments made by Harry Redknapp earlier in the week regarding a possible move for youngster Jamie Forrest, who has been one of the Celts stand-out players so far this season. There is also a high possibility of ex-Dutch international, Bolo Zenden, joining the club after several months as a free agent, according to first-team coach, Alan Thompson.
While Celtic’s luck seems to have changed for the better, on the blue side of Glasgow, Ranger’s seems to have very much turned for the worse. Despite being 12 points clear in the league, the prospect of the club going into administration has left an immense pressure on the players and manager not to drop points as if they are to lose ten points, they will need things to go their way if they are still to win the league, and more importantly, have a chance to qualify for the Champions League next season. They took another blow as, after being stretchered off against Aberdeen last weekend, it was confirmed that star forward, Steven Naismith, had torn the cruciate ligament in his right knee and will therefore be out of action for the remainder of the season. He has undoubtedly been Rangers’ best player thus far this season; however, Nikica Jelavic looks more than fit to step into his boots in terms of scoring, following an impressive brace against Dundee Utd on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the league, after a home defeat at the hands of struggling Dunfermline, Colin Calderwood was sacked as Hibs manager. His twelve months at the helm of the capital’s club was less than impressive with only 12 wins out of 49. Bottom of the league Caley Thistle pulled off a spectacular 6-3 win away to Kilmarnock. Things are very close in the league in general at the moment, after 14 games, with only seven points separating fourth from last in the league.
