Adam's FA Cup Round Up

No, there were no any Premier League games this past weekend due to the F.A. Cup but that doesn’t mean there weren’t Prem. Clubs playing and sometimes playing each other. Here is a quick rundown of what happened in the F.A. Cup from the weekend.

Before the weekend even started we had a mid week game last Wednesday with Bolton beating 1-0 on an Ivan Klasnic 65’ goal which set up Sunday’s 5th round match against Fulham. On Saturday, we had a mix of 4th round replays and 5th round ties. First…

Chelsea 1-1 Everton AET (Everton advance 4-3 on penalty shootout)

The game went 0-0 after 90 minutes and it was finally Frank Lampard who broke the dead lock with his 104’ minute goal. It would not be the winner, however. Leighton Baines scored in the 118’ minute to even the score and the tie would go down to penalties, which is not a good omen for Chelsea. In the battle of the Blues it was Everton who knocked Chelsea out to advance to the 5th round.

Birmingham 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

This wasn’t the sexiest match-up of the weekend but Birmingham continued their good Cup form this season with a 3-0 over Wednesday. Jean Beausejour, Obafemi Martins, and David Murphy were the scorers for Birmingham.

Stoke City 3-0 Brighton

I’m guessing this didn’t draw a huge rating here in the United States, or anywhere really, but it did happen and Carew, Walters, and Shawcross all scored in the first half to lock up the win.

Manchester United 1-0 Crawley Town

This was probably the most lopsided draw of the F.A. Cup so far but Crawley Town held their ground. The minnows outshot United 8-6 (both clubs had 3 each on goal) and also had 53% of the possession. Wes Brown won it on a header in the 28’ minute. Crawley had a chance late when Richard Brodie headed a shot into the crossbar, but it just wasn’t meant to be for the tiny club.

We had three games on Sunday with one of them being a 4th round replay, Man City v. Notts County, and the two other being 5th round ties.

Manchester City 5-0 Notts County

City simply brushed aside Notts County with a 5-0 thrashing thanks to two goals from Patrick Vieira, and one each from Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko, and Micah Richards.

Fulham 0-1 Bolton

Bolton again won on an Ivan Klasnic first half goal. This time it was to take the 5th round tie at Fulham.

Leyton Orient 1-1 Arsenal

This was another lopsided match-up in which the smaller team really showed well. Arsenal took the lead on a headed goal by Tomas Rosicky in the 53' minute. The Gunners looked like they would hold on until the home side got an unlikely equalizer from Jonathan Tehoue in the 89’ minute. This forces a 5th round replay that Arsenal really could have done without.

There was just one game on Monday and it was another 5th round match.

West Ham 5-1 Burnley

It has been a poor Prem. season for West Ham but this was a nice win for them over Burnley at home. They took a 4-0 lead thanks to a Thomas Hitzlsperger goal, then two from Carlton Cole, and another from Winston Reid. Burnley got one back when Jay Rodriguez scored but Fred Sears kept the margin at four when he scored a 90’ minute goal to cap off a great night for the Hammers.

After one more 5th round replay (Arsenal v. Leyton Orient) and two more 5th round ties (Man City v. Aston Villa and Everton v. Reading) are completed on March 1st and 2nd, we will then be on to the quarter finals where five clubs are already waiting. We will be back to Premier League action this coming weekend.
