Kilmarnock lost two points after strugglers Celtic fought back from a three goal deficit at half-time to gain a draw at Rugby Park. Meanwhile, at Ibrox, St Mirren were also unlucky to come away with only a point after Rangers produced one of their worst performances of the season. For the neutral, Kilmarnock and St Mirren missing out on these wins was the biggest disappointment since East Fife-Forfar ended two goals short of the perfect score line at 4-3.
Kilmarnock went into the game with all guns blazing. They demonstrated impressive team play with nice passing plays and were rewarded with three goals by half time, coming from Dean Shiels, Paul Heffernan and James Fowler. The score was still 3-0 to the home team with 15 minutes left on the clock; however, a three-minute-brace from Anthony Stokes and a header from defender Charlie Mulgrew saw the match end at 3-3. It was a very dramatic and was just a shame that the drama couldn’t have been added to by a late winner from either team.
For almost everyone, Celtic’s incredibly poor start to the season has been very depressing in some way. For Celtic fans, the disappointment in what looked at the start of the season to be a very strong side as they continually fail to meet their expectations, with only two wins in their last seven games. This is almost even more depressing for neutrals or fans of other SPL teams as despite this appalling form, the Glasgow side are still third in the league with a game in-hand after ten games. The sides just below the Old Firm should have capitalised on Celtic’s faults and seized their opportunity to bridge the gap between the Glasgow teams and the rest of Scotland; instead, we are left with Motherwell, who have put in a valiant effort, three points ahead of Celtic having played a game more and still seven points behind Rangers, and Hearts a point behind Celtic having also played a game more.
Rangers suffered possibly from a case of resting on their laurels. They have got by in so many games both this season and last with 1-0 victories having scored early in the second half and then just sitting back for the rest of the match. Why should this game be any different? Well it was, and Rangers were taken somewhat by surprise when plucky St Mirren came up with the goods in the 95th minute as ex-Ger Steven Thompson struck home after a pacy attack from the Buddies.
Elsewhere in the league, Motherwell beat Hibs 1-0 at Easter Road through an early strike from Jamie Murphy; Hearts won 2-0 against Dunfermline at East End Park thanks to goals from Andy Webster and Rudi Skacel; Aberdeen beat Dundee Utd 3-1 at Pittodrie while St Johnstone saw away Caley Thistle 2-0.
