Premier League Recap (April 9-11)
Wolves 0-3 Everton
Quietly, Everton has made a run and now sit in 7th place after this 3-0 win. They dominated the first half after a Jermaine Beckford header, a right footed rocket from Phil Neville, then a left footed rocket from Dinyar Bilyaletdinov made it 3-0 and the Wolves fans were not happy. The score would stay the same and Everton continues their good run.
Manchester United 2-0 Fulham
This was one of those, we know we are going to win and you know we are going to win so how about we just win, matches for United. They didn’t look great as a team but Nani was on his game again, setting up both goals for Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia. Fulham had chances but the three points were never in doubt for the league leaders.
Chelsea 1-0 Wigan
The play was much better from Chelsea but the goals still aren’t coming, especially for Fernando Torres. The Spaniard was substituted for Nic Anelka in the second half and had to great chances to score but it wasn’t meant to be. Didier Drogba looked up for it setting up players for chances but none were finished and the game sat at 0-0. Until a scrappy goal was hit home by Florent Malouda to give Chelsea the home win. Wigan played well but probably got what they deserved.
Tottenham 3-2 Stoke
A win for Spurs was the only way to respond after their thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid last week. They got that win but it wasn’t easy. Peter Crouch and Luka Modric both scored beautiful goals to make it 2-0 but Stoke fought back, thanks to a run and finish by Matthew Etherington. Peter Crouch got another goal using his head to make it 3-1 but Stoke scored again with a Kenwyne Jones left footed rocket. It was 3-2 at halftime and all five goals were first class. The score would stay the same and Tottenham got a much needed three points.
Blackburn 1-1 Birmingham
Not one of those mouth watering matchups, but still an important game, I guess. Lee Bowyer scored first for Birmingham before the young Junior Hoilett equalized for Blackburn after picking Liam Ridgewell clean. That was it and a point a piece to the two teams.
Bolton 3-0 West Ham
West Ham continued their confusing run as they were dominated on Saturday by Bolton. Danny Sturridge scored his first before Chung Yong-Lee and Sturridge again made it 3-0 to finish the Hammers off. Demba Ba had a few good shots on goal but that was the only positive West Ham could take from this one.
Sunderland 2-3 West Brom
Sunderland had to respond after their 5-0 blowout loss to Man City last week and they did just that. It was a Shorey own goal that got Sunderland going but Peter Odemwingie leveled it a 1-1. Phil Bardsley then gave Sunderland the lead on a missile of a free kick that went into the top left corner. Yusef Mulumbu tied it again for West Brom and then Paul Scharner gave the away side the lead 3-2 after an impressive build up. Roy Hodgson really has West Brom playing well with another three priceless points.
Blackpool 1-3 Arsenal
With these two teams playing you knew it was going to be an open game and it was. Jens Lehmann got his first start for Arsenal since joining the club and while he looked decent there were still those scary moments that we are used to from Arsenal keepers. Abou Diaby and Emmanuel Eboue both scored in the first half after nice passing sequences and it looked like a formality until Blackpool struck early in the second half through Gary Taylor-Fletcher to trim the lead. Both teams continued to push and create chances but it was Arsenal who would seal it after a brilliant counter attack involving Diaby, Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, and finished by Robin Van Persie. The Gunners have to win every game and they did so in Sunday.
Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle
This certainly wasn’t the best game of the weekend but a big one for each team, nonetheless. James Collins headed home off an Ashley Young free kick for Villa and it would prove to be enough for the victory.
Liverpool 3-0 Man City
The Monday matchup was the most glamorous of the weekend and it lived up to it if you are LeBron James or a Liverpool fan. The Merseyside club dominated the first half and the first goal was always going to come from them, and oh how it came. Andy Carroll got his first Liverpool goal on a left footed blast that swerved low and away from keeper Joe Hart. City created very few chances while Liverpool kept coming and they got two more in fact. One from Dirk Kuyt after a wild sequence of shots and blocks and passing around the box, and Liverpool’s third was again Carroll on a header from a Raul Miereles cross. Anfield was rocking and that was that. 3-0 to Liverpool and another big win for Dalglish’s men.
While United remained the leaders, the races for the Champions League, Europa League, and relegation are heating up. With only six or seven games left for each team, every manager and player must be on their A game from here on out.
