Visiting Tijuana, one thing an individual has to try is the seafood in downtown Tijuana. At the Estadio Caliente Xolos were the hosts to the buffet, for the fans of 23,000 plus. Club Tijuana entertained Veracruz one of the oldest football clubs in Mexico, which just recently returned to Liga MX. Veracruz at the start of the Mexican apertura enjoyed a rather fantastic start to their season, at the top of the pack after four games into the league. Xoloitzcuintles on the other end endured a harsh start to the apertura, entering the Caliente undefeated at home, but in 13th in the Liga.

The match kicked off on a sultry night in border town of Tijuana, and Xolos were quick firing right out of the starting gate. Dominating possession and creating more opportunities than Veracruz, it only took the Aztec dogs 35 minutes to find the back of the net. A well-timed tackle by Cristian Pellerano halted the Tiburones Rojos (Red Sharks) counter-attack. Pellerano was able to find Olsina on his run into the box and Diego Olsina squared the ball across goal for the trailing Fidel Martinez to simply tap it home. The second of the night would come out of a result from a set piece just four minutes after the first goal was scored. Neatly placed into the space again by Diego Olsina for Pablo Aguilar to re-direct the ball into the post and in the back of the net. Throughout the first half of the match Veracruz found it very difficult to find a rhythm to their build up play and only looked threatening to Tijuana on the counter.

At the start of the second half the Aztec dogs found themselves still in command of the game, holding a strong majority of possession and threatening the red sharks goalie Edgar Hernandez. The first sub of the night came in the 59th minute for Club Tijuana, Paul Arriola was brought on for Richard Ruiz to add fresh legs for Xolos, and Veracruz would also try to change things when bringing on Cristian Ezequiel for Luis Sanchez. The third goal of the night would come to the Tijuana and to the young Fidel Martinez, the man in form for Xolos, a wonderful ball floated over the top of the Veracruz defense by Cristian Pellerano found the run by Martinez and the young Ecuadorian was cool to dispatch the ball over the rushing Hernandez to make it 3-0 in the 65th minute.

Veracruz found it challenging from the get-go to produce any “real” opportunities on the Xolos goal, in fact the red sharks had lacked a real cohesive unit in the middle of the park. Making all efforts for Veracruz highly limited, and when one is limited to their opportunities you have to burry the few you get, and that wasn’t the story for the Tiburones Rojos. Tijuana instead took center stage of the match and with there efforts came the outcome Xolos wanted, continued undefeated streak in the estadio Caliente and all three points. Saturday night it was the fisherman’s hook for the red sharks and they were served on a plate for the Xoloitzcuintles.
