Podcasting on the iPhone
Due to the limitations of the iPhone, you cannot natively subscribe to podcasts or update podcasts directly on the iPhone. Below are several options for listening to the show on your iPhone.

Option 1: To subscribe to the show podcasts, you must subscribe to them and update them through iTunes on your computer. You can then sync your iPhone to iTunes to transfer the latest podcast clips to your iPhone. Learn More

Option 2: If you have access to the internet on your iPhone, you can stream the full show and clips from the show on the WFD Premium mobile website. Just go to http://www.wfdpremium.com in your iPhone's web browser and log into your WFD Premium membership account. Click on the Latest Show link to access all the clips from the last show. Or click on the Archives link to access clips from older shows.

Option 3: There are third-party apps in the App Store available for purchase which will allow you to subscribe to podcasts and download the clips to your iPhone without the use of a computer. You can then listen to the clips through those apps. Learn More


To subscribe to a podcast:
  1. You must first have iTunes installed on your computer. If you do not have iTunes, you can download it free from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download. Then install the program.
  2. On your computer, go to http://www.wfdpremium.com and log in to your WFD Premium membership account. You must have a WFD Premium membership to subscribe to the podcasts. If you do not have a WFD Premium membership, you will be given membership purchase options on the homepage.
  3. After you log in, you should be taken automatically to the Podcasting page. If you are not, click the Podcasting link in the main menu.
  4. Click the iTunes icon below the podcast you want to subscribe to. That will automatically open iTunes, subscribe you to that podcast, and download the most recent clip from that podcast to your computer.

To transfer clips from podcasts to your iPhone:
  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  2. iTunes should automatically open when your iPhone is connected. If it does not, start iTunes manually.
  3. If you have iTunes set to automatically sync with your iPhone when you connect it to your computer, then the podcast clips should automatically start transferring to your iPhone when iTunes opens.
  4. If you are manually managing what syncs to your iPhone when you connect it to iTunes, click your iPhone under "Devices" in the left column in iTunes. Then in the right column, click the Podcasts tab. Ensure that "Sync Podcasts" is checked and the desired podcasts you want to sync are showing up under the "Podcasts" list. Then click the "Sync" button at the bottom to begin transferring the clips to your iPhone.
  5. While the files are transferring, you will see a spinning wheel next to your iPhone under "Devices" in the left column in iTunes. When the transfer is complete, iTunes will display "iPhone sync is complete. OK to disconnect." You can then disconnect your iPhone from the computer. Your iPhone will contain the clips you synced to it.

To play clips transferred to your iPhone:
  1. On your iPhone's Home screen, tap the iPod icon to start up the iPod program.
  2. Tap "More" at the bottom.
  3. Tap "Podcasts" to see a list of podcasts you have transferred to your iPhone.
  4. Tap the podcast name to go to the list of episodes of that podcast that you have transferred to your iPhone.
  5. Tap the episode you want to listen to to start playback.

To update podcast clips on your iPhone:
  1. Start iTunes on your computer.
  2. Once open, iTunes should automatically start downloading the most recent clips for your podcasts. If it does not, click "Podcasts" in the left column, click on the desired podcast to select it, right click on it to bring up the context menu, and click "Update Podcast" from that menu.
  3. While the podcasts are downloading, you will see a spinning wheel next to "Downloads" in the left menu. Once they are finished downloading, the wheel will disappear and the number of podcasts that were updated will appear next to "Podcasts" in the left menu.
  4. When the downloads are finished, connect your iPhone to your computer.
  5. If you have iTunes set to automatically sync with your iPhone when you connect it to your computer, then the new clips should automatically start transferring to your iPhone when iTunes opens.
  6. If you are manually managing what syncs to your iPhone when you connect it to iTunes, then click your iPhone under "Devices" in the left column in iTunes. Then in the right column, click the Podcasts tab. Ensure that "Sync Podcasts" is checked and the desired podcasts you want to sync are showing up under the "Podcasts" list. Then click the "Sync" button at the bottom to begin transferring the clips to your iPhone.
  7. While the files are transferring, you will see a spinning wheel next to your iPhone under "Devices" in the left column in iTunes. When the transfer is complete, iTunes will display "iPhone sync is complete. OK to disconnect." You can then disconnect your iPhone from the computer. Your iPhone will contain the clips you synced to it.

To subscribe to a podcast with a third-party app:
One app that allows you to subscribe to podcasts directly on your iPhone on iOS4 is called Podcaster. It sells for $1.99 in the App Store. The iOS3 version of the app is also available. It is called RSS Player Podcast Client, and it sells for $2.99 in the App Store. Below are instructions for subscribing to podcasts using these apps. The instructions may vary if you use a different third-party app.
  1. Install Podcaster from the App Store if you are running iOS4, or RSS Player Podcast Client from the App Store if you are running iOS3.
  2. Open your iPhone's web browser and go to http://www.wfdpremium.com. Then log into your WFD Premium member account.
  3. Click the Podcasting link in the main menu.
  4. Tap the text box that contains the link to the podcast feed you want to subscribe to. This should put the cursor in that textbox.
  5. Touch and hold your finger in that same text box until the magnifying glass pops up, then release. A popup should appear with a few options on it. Tap "Select All."
  6. With the entire podcast feed url selected, there should be another popup with other options. Click "Copy."
  7. Hit the Home button to exit the web browser. Then open up Podcaster or RSS Player Podcast Client.
  8. In Podcaster, click Directory at the bottom, then click Import. In RSS Player Podcast Client, click Search at the bottom, then click Import by URL.
  9. You will see a text box to enter your podcast url. Tap in the text box. It should already have "http://" in that field. Delete that, because the link you copied has that in it already.
  10. Tap again in the text box to bring up a popup with some options. Click "Paste."
  11. Click the "Next" button.
  12. The app should tell you that feed was added successfully.
  13. If you are using RSS Player Podcast Client, click the "Search" arrow at the top to return to the Search page.
  14. Click the "Downloads" icon at the bottom of the app to go to the Download page. Your podcasts should be displayed there. Click "Start Downloads" to begin downloading the most recent podcast. If you are connected to wi-fi, they may have already downloaded automatically, leaving this page blank. If you don't see any downloads on this page, go to the next step.
  15. When the download is complete, click the "Playlists" icon at the bottom, then select "Unplayed Downloads."
  16. On the bottom of this screen. you'll see a Video button and an Audio button. Select Video to see the video clips you've downloaded, or Audio to see the audio clips you've downloaded.
  17. Tap the clip that you want to watch or listen to. That will bring that clip up in app's player.
  18. Click the play button at the bottom to begin watching or listening to the clip.

To update the podcast clips with a third-party app:
  1. Open up RSS Podcast Client.
  2. Click the "Downloads" button at the bottom.
  3. The latest new clip for the podcasts you've subscribed to should be displayed there. It may take a moment for them to show up on that page. If none show up, then you have already downloaded the latest clip.
  4. Click "Start Downloads."
  5. When the downloads finish, click "Playlists" at the bottom, and then click "Unplayed Downloads" to find and play your new clips.
